Where Are Some Places You Wouldn't Take Crochet?

To wander briefly off topic... have you tried taking ginger capsules for motion sickness? I get motion sickness too, and had tried just about everything over the counter or prescription, and nothing was helping - or it would help, but then it would knock me out, or make my mouth so dry I could hardly swallow. I did so research on natural remedies and decided to try ginger capsules, and they're the only thing that has ever worked with no side effects! You can get them at Wal-Mart.

 

My motion sickness has actually become proverbial among life-long friends and family members. Ginger buttons (hard candy) and candied ginger (crystalized sugar-coated ginger) are just about the only things that can keep my nausea under control. They work best for me if they're icy-cold, so I tend to keep a bag of ginger buttons in the freezer and grab them if we're road-tripping.

 

Candied ginger is a little hard to find for me, but I can get ginger buttons at Cracker Barrell.

I've wanted to crochet at some movies I take my son to, but haven't yet. I haven't tried it at the beach, don't go to church much anyhow, and wouldn't crochet at a funeral. I take showers, so crocheting there is out!

There are very few places I won't knit or crochet: funerals, wedding ceremonys, christenings (exept it's for the baby and I am running out of time) and in the car when i am driving. I knit a lot in the car when my husband drives (crocheting then makes me carsick, knitting not, I have to watch my knitting less)

I've crocheted in the bathtub and I'll tell you - mercerized threads ok, acrylics not too bad if it gets wet but never again with cotton. lol just make sure it's a small project.

 

I always bring my work with me or make sure I have a small enough project to take with me while i ride in the car. I wouldn't even try to crochet and drive at the same time.

 

I would probably do some lace work or prayer shawls while sitting in church waiting for the service to start or while sitting vigil at the grave Holy Saturday but I would put it away during mass.

 

I just wouldn't pull it out after a few cocktails because I know i'd end up frogging lol.

I wouldn't crochet in a movie theatre....it's too dark in there, and if I ever broke down and bought one of those lighted hooks, I'm afraid they'd be too much of a distraction.

 

(However, I did crochet at a drive-in..up until about when the movie began...then it got too dark.)

 

I wouldn't crochet in the workplace itself. I work for the US government, and you don't want your hard-earned tax money to go to someone who's crocheting when she should be working? However, I do crochet during my breaks and lunches, and I've perfected the art of eating my lunch and working at the same time.

 

I wouldn't crochet while driving.

 

I wouldn't crochet in a casino or bingo hall. (Too smokey).

 

Right now, I couldn't crochet on an airplane...not because of any FAA regulations, but because I'm so big, I barely fit into my seat to begin with. To attempt to crochet would be impossible.

I love to crochet at the beach. When the kids were little, I would watch them play in the water and keep my hands busy crocheting something. We would eat an early dinner and I would let them play until they blew the whistles at sunset. It was just so relaxing. I just kept the yarn in a bag and the bag on a sheet, to keep sand away.

 

I would not crochet during a church service. I think we need to show respect.

 

I would not crochet when being examined by a doctor. I will crochet up to the point he steps into the little room. BTW, when I was waiting for my obgyn and he got called to deliver a baby and was running very late, I just sat in the room and crocheted away. Loved that time.

 

Baseball games, train rides, airplane rides, children's sporting events, waiting rooms, parks, beaches, working admissions during kid's sporting events, etc. are all places I am busy hooking.

 

I think if it is annoying someone, or that you really need to pay attention, then it's not appropriate to be crocheting.

I feel I have to respond to this as it really does hit home for me.

 

for a while, I attended a Pentecostal church but the problem is that I cannot (physically/mechanically) sing and I cannot stand for an hour either so "worship" was not going to happen. (and don't get me started on 'if you aren't singing you aren't worshipping)

 

the only gift I had to offer in worship and prayer was my knitting and crochet. Actually, as soon as I pick up my or I start praying. it was an act of worship for me and further all that was available to me. I am not saying this is true for everyone but it was true for me and I bet it was true for others.

 

As soon as the sermon started, I got my pen and notes out and paid strict attention.

I have to stand on the side of not doing it during worship service. We too use our hands alot during worship, but I take notes too so I couldn't do both. I too think it would be a bit disrespectful to the speaker, maybe send the wrong message that what they have to say isn't "captivating" or interesting enough to hold their attention. At least I think that's how I'd feel if I were the one speaking and saw someone crafting.

 

Darski does make a good point I have to admit. Sometimes the praise & worship segments can run long. And when I'm listening to Joyce Meyer on t.v., I've got hook in hand, and I don't miss a thing. I pray and meditate quite a lot when I'm crocheting. But during the sermon, I'm listening and writting.

 

Other than that, I'd never take it into one of those long boring staff meetings, although I LONG to.

One place I won't take my crocheting is to my MIL's. She is a knitter. And everytime I bring out my crocheting, EVERY TIME, I hear about how she doesn't like crochet because it's so stiff, whereas knitting is soft and lacy.

 

As for church - well, your mentioning taking NOTES in church caught me off guard. I am catholic, and if you pulled out pen and paper at a mass, my GOODNESS, you would be stared at as disrespectful! I would LOVE to crochet in church, as I would CERTAINLY pay better attention, plus most of my stuff is charity and I sort of get into prayer mode while working on it, praying for the recipient. (I really thought I was the only one who did this until I met so many of you here on the 'Ville)

 

I *have* crocheted on my exercise bike. Quite successfully, too. Put a canvas bag with your project in it and suspend a strap from each handle bar. Cup holder has scissors in it.

 

I love long rides - I don't get carsick!

 

I will not take it fishing, either. Can't get the fishy smell off your hands to crochet. But I will take it on the boat if I'm not fishing.

 

If I die, I hope I have a whole row of ladies sitting on the couches at my wake and funeral crocheting up a storm. You're all invited!

I figure whatever diety you choose to worship must understand that you are different from the person next to you and would certainly rather you pay attention and enjoy the message than to sit, yawn, look around, and check your watch every 15 seconds. Even if it does mean bring a crocheting or knitting project.

Hmmm... there aren't many places I wouldn't crochet! I'm far too fidgety to just sit still for any length of time and if my hands don't have anything to do, my mind just goes bananas. Personally, crocheting during some activity doesn't necessarily mean I'm not paying attention (AHEM... HUBBY haha). I even took a project to my stepson's baseball game Friday night. I got some dirty looks, but hey, I looked up when he was batting or in the outfield. I've crocheted in class, mainly when I've already got a good grasp of the subject.

 

But I absolutely cannot crochet in the car. I used to be able to do anything riding along, but not anymore. I'll definitely have to try the ginger idea, though!

 

My uncle's girlfriend took her knitting to my sister's high school graduation. I can't blame her and I was so jealous that I didn't think of that!!!

I too, must disagree about places of worship. Small, memorized prpjects where my fingers can do all the work, of course. But I am so at peace when crocheting, that I feel I would be able to absorb everything a Church had to give better with a hook and yarn in my hands.

 

I don't go to Church anymore, however [due to my own beliefs of not needing a building to worship Him], so I guess it is moot.

 

I've even crocheted and knitted in the ER while waiting to be seen by the doctor [i was having such a hard time breathing that night...crochet helped calm me].

 

I wouldn't crochet actually on the sand at the beach, but I will sit on the sidelines maybe in a park and crochet.

I've found "Ginger Snap" candies in my local CVS where you find both the mints and gum and also where you'd find other anti-nausea medicine. They work great for my brother and mom, though I generally tend not to get motion-sickness. Good Luck!

My first thought was the bathroom. That would be gross.

 

But after reading some of these posts, I would have to say:

 

I couldn't crochet in church. Because most of the things I make take counting and I have to pay attention to that. I wouldn't hear anything said if I crocheted in church.

So that takes care of any place that you have to pay attention, or at least act like you are paying attention. Such as Weddings and/or funerals.

I wouldn't take mine to the beach. Too sandy. Besides I go with the kids. You can't watch a two year old at the beach and crochet at the same time.

I wouldn't take it to the movies because it's too dark. I have to look at what I am doing.

I wouldn't take it to the bath because I take showers. That wouldn't work to well. I think it would be a little difficult to crochet with wet yarn. Then I couldn't get much done because I would need to get clean. If I am crocheting I would just waist all the hot water and still be dirty.

 

I wish I could crochet like you guys, not having to look at every stitch, or have to keep count with every stitch. I think it's just a part of my personality though. So I will live with it. If I didn't then I couldn't crochet, what a tragedy that would be.

I go to a large university and all of my classes have anywhere between 30 to 150 students. Even in classes that are practically held in large auditoriums, I'd never dare to crochet. Besides being really disrespectful to the professor, it's pretty much a fact that any professor would kick you out of the class for doing something like that.

You can get ginger capsules at Wal-Mart or just about any place that sells vitamins and suppliments - at my Wal-Mart they're on the shelf with the vitamins. I think mine are 550mg capsules, other places I've seen them they're either 500 or 1000mg. What I do is take two capsules (you'd only want to take one if you had the 1000mg ones) about 30 minutes before traveling and another one every four hours as needed.

 

Others have already made good suggestions for where to find ginger candies; you can also get crystalized (candied) ginger at many grocery stores. I also like ginger tea (Yogi brand), which I buy in the health food section of the grocery store - you want real ginger tea, not the ginger flavored tea that Lipton makes.

 

Most ginger ale isn't actually made with ginger as a real ingredient anymore, it just has ginger flavoring, but it sometimes helps an upset tummy as much as a Sprite or 7-Up does.

 

My doctor told me as well that ginger is proving very helpful for pregnant women with morning sickness (nothing I'll ever have to worry about, but good to know anyway!) and he also said he'd recently read a paper on the scent of lemons being helpful, which may be why lemon-lime pop seems to help settle a lot of upset tummies.

 

Umm, ok, I'll stop talking about motion sickness remedies for now. LOL Just trying to help my fellow crocheters find ways to crochet in a vehicle!

On long car rides (1 hr +) I have to crochet. I can't look out the window more than a few mins. I get dizzy watching everything fly by. When I was younger, I used to read or sleep.

I can't believe that out of 10,000 members I'm the only bathroom crocheter. Growing up the Mom's house has kind of an open floor plan and we used to call the bathroom "The Office" - I'd take my personal phone calls and everything in there. Other than my room which was upstairs, it was the only place on the main floor for a little privacy. That and I have a thing for 2 hour bubble baths!

 

I do have a magazine rack filled with my crochet catalogs for when I use the powder room for it's intended purposes.

 

I'm addicted - I have a problem - I don't want an intervention.

I don't think you are strange for wanting to crochet in the bathroom!! Shoot, I've been known to bring yarn in the bathroom, lol! At our last place (an apartment) the master bathroom had the walk in closet in there (weird place for a closet, I know) and it had all my yarn in it!! So it was the yarn sanctuary for me...bathroom/closet, lol!! :yarn:yarn Now we are in our new place and all the yarn from the closet is now in containers in my garage. Sad, I know. I hope to have another yarn sanctuary in the near future..
