What is your most "Prized Possession" in crochet?

My most prized possession that I have is a pink Susan Bates hook that was my grandmother's. The hook's color is worn off where the yarn keeps riding back and forth while crocheting, especially with the both of us having used the hook. Anytime I need a size "G" that's the one I use. Somehow it just sends me down Memory Lane and that's an awful nice trip to take.:)h

mine is also a hook. my gr grndfather made it for my biological (he remarried) gr. grandmother. she died when my grandfather was just 23. anyhow, it is a solid brass welding rod that he filed a hook into one end... back in the day when money for extras just wasn't around, he made it.

it has some serious weight to it. my guess is that it is about a I/J - it's just fun using it, knowing that it was so adored by her and then by my grandmother (her dil). my guess is that this puppy is going to last quite a while :lol

Hmmmm. I have to say the bag I use for my wips--it is the one my grandmother kept her knitting in, and it is just the right size, made with a funky fabric from the 60s (?). I love it! She also had about 100 knitting needles and loads of yarn that I have now. I am almost done using all her yarn up, and will never get rid of all her knitting tools even though I only know how to knit and purl!

My sister and I are the first generation in our family to crochet. No one crochets or knits or does any type of needlework really in my family other than the 2 of us. My little sister (she's 12) is starting to pick it up now too, but that's because she sees us doing it ;) I dont have a prized possession yet for crochet - maybe someday...

DITTO...all of the items that my Grandmother had kept and I got from my mom. A leather case that I keep some hooks in..it has a cute little snap button from the side that snaps on top. I have some orignal wooden sewing spools of silk thread! and all of her knitting needles only one of her crochet needles! All the other stuff is replaceable.

To Chelle....that is great to hear that you are the first in the family...you may not think anything is that 'prized' yet, but go ahead and keep some items or buy some that can be kept for the later generations. All this I think is important and I think we are losing it....we must keep our art alive!:)

I'm also the first in my family to seriously crochet. Everybody had done it at one time or another, but most of my relatives thought I was funny for wanting to crochet rather than quilt or knit, I guess. I don't have a handed-down prized possession because of that, but I do have a set of wooden hooks that Rick bought for me, along with a wooden case for them. I love my wooden hooks dearly, and would love to think that someday those hooks would be a precious thing for somebody else. :)h

My most prized crochet possession is the baby blanket and pillow my mom made when she was pregnant with me. It is in grey and yellow shells and on one side, the shells are raised in grey, then you flip it over to the other side and the shells are raised in yellow, almost like 3 dimensional. It is in beautiful condition and she is still around at the age of 85 and I am 52, so that gives you an idea of the age of it. The pillow is the matching stitch with a little satin piece on the underside to slip in either a pillow form or stuffing.

My next prized possessions are the starched, ruffled thread dresses that go on dolls that were made by one of my great aunts who died in the 60's.

Crochet skipped a few generations in my family, starting up again recently with my mom and I, but I was lucky to get a few doilies made by my great-great-grandmother around the turn of the century. I also have some made by my great-grandmother before she passed in the 1970's.

I just had a thought. I have a personalized wooden crochet hook with Chelle across the middle of it. That is something I could pass down to my oldest daughter and maybe she would then pass it down to her daughter. Maybe I will be the one for which prized crochet possessions are started in my family and passed down :cloud9

i think my most prized crochet possession is a vase(not really a vase but a hatpin holder) full of old hooks my great great grandmother brought from ireland... they are bone.. i dont use them because i am afraid i will break them for one and for two... they are very small.. she did mainly thread crochet... i dont do much of that .. every once and a while i will ... but when i do i usually just use a steel...

I have my Grandmother's steel and aluminum hooks. The steel hooks are precious to me :)h - some of them are so worn they're beginning to tarnish (I think that's what steel does) and you can't really see the numbers on them. I also love her pattern books (and her original patterns... written longhand!). I also love to cuddle in the granny square afghan I inherited after she passed.

My most prized possession is my ability to crochet. My grandmother crochets but she could not teach me because she learned by watching. She cannot read patterns but she just makes up the most beautiful items. She wanted me to learn the proper way so I could read patterns and do all sorts. Therefore I decided to teach myself. I consider this skill special and I hope nothing ever happens where I cannot continue to create.

I'm like lauravee, my prized possession in crocheting is the ability to crochet and make things up as I go along. Only recently after 35 years of crocheting have I begun seriously working with patterns...it's not going to stop me from designing, but it might actually make my designs better.

I have two. first is my husband....who thinks everything I make is beautiful! second is a crocheted thread dresser scarf made by my great-grandmother who died before I was born. It is huge, maybe 66 in. long and 24in wide. It covers my whole dresser and hangs off both ends. Very pretty. I've also used it on the buffet table by my front door.

Have to add...now that I've invested in whole sets of hooks, both steel and aluminum...next to my ability to crochet, the set of Boye steel hooks are my best friends...:wangel

My grandmother made my mom a diaper bag out of some god awful colors (it was made from her scraps!) for her when she was pregnant with my brother (who is 27 years old). I use that same bag now for my WIPs. :) It's so ugly, but it has grown on me! I once found myself thinking of making a purse to match it then I thought to myself "What are you THINKING?!?" Lol

Wow Froggy that is so neat... My prized possession is also my grandmother's crochet. I found it after she passed away and did not even know she crocheted. The neat part is it is also a G hook! Susan Bates too! It has not worn out yet, but soon because it seems all my recent projects use it. It is nice to have something of hers and think of her when I do the projects.

Just the other day I was talking to my dad about the hook (it was his mother) and he told me it my have been my great grandmothers. She was addicted to crochet and never went anywhere without some WIP with her. That was so neat to learn because I never knew that and it sounds like that is where I get it from, because everywhere I go I have WIP with me.

My most prized possessions are (in no particular order):

1. My trusty double sided hook from Wal-Mart (don't even know what size it is but it's a bit smaller than the Q I recently bought).

2. My sister - she's the one who taught me to crochet. I don't even know how to read a pattern :shrug but she just taught me the basics and I was off and creating and selling my things within weeks!!! I have a hard time crocheting without her company. So a BIG :ty to her!!

My grandmother crocheted lace doilies and table runners all her life, even when her fingers were all crooked and arthritic. She taught me to crochet, and I have her teeny-gauge hooks that I use to make chokers from time to time. My real crochet passion is blankets.

A side note: my other grandmother sewed for our family, did tailoring, etc. She taught me to sew on an old Singer machine, the kind you used in Home Ec in the 70's. I have that machine now. It's comforting to be able to keep up a tradition from my family.

my most prized crochet item is some doilys that my hubbys grandmas made for us when we got married, they are still in great shape and i use them in my living room on the antique coffee table that my hubbys gr gr grandpa carved wayyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy back when. it is done in queen ann style. he also carved a desk which we have too in our hall. i also have some tableclothes that my grammie made me when i was little, i use to sit and watch her crochet and always say how do you do that grammie, she would try and explain but it wasn't until my 3rd grade teacher taught me to crochet that i really appreciated it. but she passed away before i was really good and i wish i could show her how much i have learned. my gr aunt was the only one then who crocheted and i inheirated all of her stuff!!!!:clap :clap :clap :clap :clap vicki:hug
