What do you have to have by your side while you crochet?

Recommended Posts

Yarn, hooks and scissors(in bank bag) drink, cat, and seam ripper to remove any of my hair that got twisted with the project. I think some of the hairs are actually the cats. Encyclopedia of crochet. and patterns.

Wow, I'm not nearly as prepared as you guys! I usually just make sure I have the pattern book, my hook, extra yarn and the remaote if my hubby doesn't have them monopolized. You've all given me some great ideas, though...

When my hands get tired and I need a break, I like to have crochet magazines next to me to look through. Even if I've looked at them a hundred times! I always have my favourite project bag of the week stuffed with:

magazines, an extra project in case I get bored, extra yarn in case I run out, my chibi with needles, scissors, chocolate - you know, the important stuff. I also like to have my mp3 player loaded with an audible book since I can't read and crochet at the same time and I miss books so much. :)

:cat I always have a cat by my side. They usually sit next to me until I have less than a dozen stiches left before I need to turn my work, thats usually when they climb onto whatever I am working on.

I have a large bag by my side that has various yarns in it for the different projects I'm working on. I also have a stitch counter, my hook case, needles, scissors and the ever-so-purposeful Post-It pad. It comes in handy for keeping my place when I'm working on patterns, as well as for writing down changes or ideas when they come to mind. I also have a stack of magazines and books for when I'm just looking for new things to try.

I usually have a basket with hooks, the one I am using and a couple of others for no apparent reason, cotton, the pattern if I need one, a book and pencil if I am designing, scissors, a ziplock baggie with a second project in it just in case, a small cat toy in case Onyx gets too frisky, and then there is the bottle of water, a cup of tea, the tv remote, a cushion for my back and one for my feet when I put them up on the coffee table too.

If I am crocheting outside then I have my sunglasses and ice tea as well.

Who knew it was so complicated to sit and crochet ;)

Well in my basket or bag I am working out of at the time (right now a big laundry basket for my ripple blanket), I keep my hook (plus two extras of the same size in case it falls out and gets lost in the basket), pattern and scissors.

When I sit down to start crocheting I make sure I have a full coke, my remote, the scissors and my extra hooks on the table beside me. Oh and my cell phone.

But that's pretty much it.

Gotta have paper and pen. That's the most important.

I usually have to be at the computer listening to a talking book or in front of the TV, since I need to listen to something while I work. Other than that, all I need is my tiny pair of scissors and at least two stitch markers. I never leave the hook in my work when I put it down - I'm too afraid of it unraveling. So, I have to use the markers to hold my last stitch.

I have my yarn, pattern, hooks, paper and pen. A big bag of stuff next to the chair. Everything is in reach of the chair. Unless I get some idea in my head then I have to get up and go to the box behind the chair or upstair to see if I can find some yarn to try it. But I do need to have a big glass of cold diet soda next to me, oh wait it can be a cup of tea too. Or iced tea. I guess I just need something to drink.

I have to have all of my crocheting things (pattern, hooks, scissors, etc), but also:

A drink

The remote

The phone

I also have to have a pen and pad of paper of some sort...if I am doing a pattern where I have to count rows I have to tally them off :)

Also, very important, a nail file. Because the yarn will find those little snags on my fingernails that I don't necessarily feel. There is nothing more annoying than having to hunt for a nail file after stitching for a few minutes. <img border=0 src="http://img28.photobucket.com/albums/v84/crochetville/veryhappy.gif" />

It all makes sense! My grandma always kept a fingernail file in her crochet basket as well. There were so many things she kept lurking in there that I always found a bit odd but now that I'm learning it makes sense. One of the things she did keep in there was a magnifying glass. I think she used it to help see/count stitches.

Ah, let's see...I have to have my crochet supplies close, I have a hook case that carries most of it so it's out on the table in front of me. I have a light and I have another lamp that I hang a magnetic fridgie with a clip on to hold the pattern in progress. I also keep a yard stick handy. In addition I have a table setup to the right of my chair where I place my phone and cell, the television and/or stereo remote and something to drink. All set!

If I were SMART like most of the people who responded to this question, I would gather:

supplies (yarn, scissors, hooks, needle, pattern, paper and pen)

TV remote

Phone

Beverage

Blanket (to keep my feet warm!)

However, I am so fogetful that I almost always forget at least one if not most of those things, and have to get up a few times to go retrieve things!! :-)

what I have beside me depends on where I am at that time. If I am at home (here at the computer desk, in my room, or in the living room) I have my crochet bag, which has a case of hooks, yarn for the current project as well as a spare in case I get frustrated with whatever I am working or, or if I run out of a color of yarn that I need, Scissors, the pattern I am working on as well as several other (backups if I change my mind about what to work on). small memo pad and pen so I can write down what row I have just finished so I know where to start when I pick it back up. A book, in case my hands or eyes get tired :) Usually have a drink, the phone and the remote if downstairs. If at my computer desk, or in my room, I have my cd player beside me with whatever I am drinking. Sometime I have candy with me also (whatever I am in to mood for at the time, gum, peppermint, butterscotch) It's usually hard candy that doesn't take to much time away from my hands, lol.

In the car, I usually have my bag with my hook case (small plastic case I found at michael's designed for holding rotary cutters, but it is perfect for my regular size hooks, a small pair of scissors, and my tapesty needle I use for weaving ends in, yarn for current project and a backup if that project is too big to take into places like the dr. office. Pattern for that project as well as at least one back up for the other yarn.

hmmmm, I guess I have a back up for everything, extra yarn, extra hooks, extra scissors, extra patterns.... I think I maybe subconciouslly I am afriad I will be somewhere and I can't crochet :eek
