Materials:

Worsted Weight yarn in 2 contrasting colors (button color and background color)
Size H hook (5.00mm)
Yarn needle (to weave in ends)

Finish Size: 8”h x 8”w inches

Different Stitches:

Back Post Single Crochet (BPSC) – Since your using this to join make sure you start with a slipknot on your hook, insert hook from back of work thru 1st side of first hdc of Rnd 3, then work hook around front of st and insert hook into other side of st (hook should be in the back of your work again), yarn over, pull up a loop, yarn over, draw thru both loops on hook.

Back Post Double Crochet (BPDC)-Yarn over, from the back of work insert hook around post of specified st and then to the back going thru other side of st, yarn over, draw up a loop, [yarn over, draw through 2 loops] Do this 2 times.

Incomplete Back Post Double Crochet (IBPDC)- Yarn over, from the back of work insert hook around post of specified st and then to the back going thru other side of st, yarn over, draw up a loop, yarn over, draw through 2 loops.

Combined Back Post Stitch (CFPST)-This happens when you are instructed in pattern to yarn over and draw thru all 3 loops on hook. When the stitches are combined they count as 1 stitch.

Extended Double Crochet (EDC)- Yarn over, insert hook in specified st, yarn over, pull up a loop, yarn over, draw thru loop, [yarn over, draw thru 2 loops on hook] Do this 2 times.

Dc in next st color changing- Yarn over, insert hook in next st, yarn over, draw up a loop, yarn over, draw thru 2 loops, yarn over with a different color, draw thru last 2 loops on hook.

Note: Leave tail when chaining 5 and then crochet over the tail. When you pull the tail taut this will make the hole from starting a little less noticeable and the button’s holes will pop just a lil more. When button part of square is done, weave in tail from starting to secure.

Directions:

Rnd 1: With button color leaving a tail ch5, join with sl st to first chain to form ring, ch3, (work the following dc over tail), 2 dc in ring, ch3, [3 dc in ring, ch3] Do this 3 times, join with sl st to top of beginning ch3.
(12dc, 4-ch3 spaces) (Beginning ch3 counts as dc)

Pull tail taut to close hole from starting, when button part is done weave in tail to (secure) keep the hole close.

Rnd 2: Ch2, 1 dc in same st as joining, 1 dc in each of the next 2 sts, 4 hdc in next ch3 space, [1 dc in each of the next 3 sts, 4 hdc in next ch3 space] Do this 3 times, join with sl st to first dc.

That is just adorable. I love it.

I can envision an afghan with the buttons different colors and the background the same or backgrounds different colors and the buttons same color or ???. So many possibilities.

Thanks for the cute pattern. :hook
