Van Gogh's Closet

Friends, Romans, countrymen, lend me your ears

(or , in VanGogh's case, lend me your ear. You can keep it attached .You don't have to HAND it to me .)

A Special Tribute :

With a great idea from a great pal (Thanks, Wendy ! ), comes the newest twist for a CAL .

:artist

I call this one VanGogh's Closet, because in order to do this, you will have to dig through your yarn closet and use some artistic talent to make up your own color design .

You will actually have your choice of ANY afghan pattern you want to use. Where the catch comes in is the way in which this afghan will be made .

You will need to use a large hook ( depending on the size yarn you are using, you may want to use either a K ,L or N . )

I think the pattern will probably be the easiest if you use either the round ripple, a straight ripple, a rectangle granny , or even 12 inch squares that will form the pattern .

I have seen 3 of these ,all in different patterns and colors and let me tell you, they are works of art. That's where I came up with the Van Gogh name .

You will be working with 2 strands of yarn throughout .Begin by using 2 strands of the same color . I will make up some colors here just to give you an idea of what I am talking about .

Say you start with 2 strands of pink .... do the pattern for as many rows as you want, then drop one strand of pink and continue using one strand of pink and one of red .... do this for a round or two, then drop the pink, pick up another strand of red, and do a few rounds of solid red. When ready to change, drop one red, pick up a blue and do a round or 2 of red and blue. then drop the red, add another blue and do 2 strands of blue.

If you are as thoroughly confused as I am at this point, then maybe showing you some photos will help . I found all 3 of these here at the ville and hope the ladies that shared them don't mind if I share their links here again .(I PM'd each of them ,but no word yet back from them)

If any of you want your photos removed, holler and I'll take them off . :)

Anyhow, here are the links to show you what I mean :

Thanks Fidgement

* Fidge sent me a note regarding yarn use if you make this into a baby-ghan. She said the Caron SS was very heavy when made with double strands ,so you may want to use a lighter yarn like baby or sport weight . Just a suggestion ~

Thanks Krystal

I think from the photos, you get the idea of what to do.

These would make stunning afghans ,no matter what pattern you chose to use. I am thinking something with rounds would show the design to the best benefit, but even a simple sc or dc afghan, using the double strands and changing colors every so many rows would give you the same effect .

Here are a couple of patterns to ponder :

Round Jacob's Ladder (*new)

Round ripple

Rectangle granny

Wave stitch( dc ripple )

12 inch squares

Come on, ladies ..... with the abundance of talent we have in this group, we could give VanGogh a run for his money ... and we'd still have both our ears in the end !

Who's in ?

*** In my CAL's we have started a tradition called Photo Friday, where we post photos on Fridays of our progress. Feel free to post photos anytime you want to, because we are always glad to see them, but if we set a specific day, it has really been a successful idea. It kinda gives us a day to shoot for, if we know Friday is the day that others will be sharing photos, Friday is kinda like our Goal Day to see how much you can do during the week to show on Fridays .

Like I said, though, photos are welcome ANY DAY ~

Hummmmm! :blush I really like the look of the round ripple. I've already done a baby blanket that used shading and I really like the way they work and look. I think I'll probably join in on this, but I want to finish at least one of my current WIPs first. :think ...............Yeah, I'm in. :hook Just won't start immediately. I think I'll do a round one for my mom for Christmas. :devil If that turns out well, maybe I'll do one for each of my brothers and their wives.:devil (I still can't spell worth a hoot today. Must be one of those days.)

I know i'll be doing a RR most likely but I have no clue what colors. I really like the caron ss brites and the pastels so i'll have to think about it. I'll put my thinking cap on while I wait to start.......:think :think

Hi Diane

Well, I don't know , but I would guess it'd work with variegated too. You are the artist on this one, so you pick the design and we'll see how it turns out. That's what will be fun with this one- every one will be its own work of art ,interpreted by the one making it . :)

Hey Linda

sounds great-- whenever you get the time to rev up that crochet hook for another project, we'll be waiting here for you . As fast as you are, I bet it won't be long !

Nichole- we'd sure be happy to have you join in. Keep checking back with us and you can jump in anytime you are ready .

Tab- that's fine, you go ahead and get your other afghan done first. I know you are on more of a time table with it, so we will be here waiting. Then you'll have time to figure out your colors. It sounds like your brain wheels are already turning on them . :lol

Well, Athba

It sure didn't take much talking to talk you into this. I may show up at your door someday selling sweepers. Wanna buy 2 or 3 ?

Just joking. I am glad you decided to join. You are a lot of fun .

Tell us what all colors your lollipop is going to be , do you know yet ?

Where was your husband when he came over to stay ? Just wondering what part of the country he got to visit while he was here . What did he like best about it , do you think ?

The hotels are expensive in some areas, it depends a lot on what state you go to and if it's a big tourist type area .

If you came here, all you'd see is trees and grass and farms .

Vicki - we'd love to include you in the gang if you are interested !

Mary- you are very welcome to drop in anytime and join in if you get time a little later on down the road .

Krystal -wow that really is pretty ! The picture almost looks like the colors are on an angle, but that pattern isn't done diagonally , is it ? Maybe it's just the way the afghan is laying . It is SO nice. I'll add it to the first post, if you don't mind .

Wendy- nope, I don't muck around . Thanks to you, this idea got off the ground really fast. Lots of interest already !

I kinda figured you'd lean away from orange this time around. I'm sure you'll find some other colors you like just as much .
