My mom would laugh out loud at this request. I believe she said for the elephant she cast on 10 then used stocking stitch for about 8-10 rows then cast off 3 st each side and kept knitting the trunk till it was long enough. then she turned over the head to make the ears and sewed the trunk together.

 

The slippers are knitted too, not her original pattern.

THanks everyone. My mom will get a kick out of the responses. The pattern for the knitted slippers is in the Walmart book (Red Heart I believe) that has the dog made out of a skein of yarn. It is also in the RH book call Family Slippers Creature Comfort. They are both cheap to buy.
