To help with the 2009 Special Olympics Scarf Project I have designed this:

Cables & Ruffles

Special Olympics Scarf

Finished size

6.5” x 54” (without edging)

 

Materials

Red Heart® Super Saver®

3 oz color 0885 Delft Blue

3 oz color 0311 White

Crochet hook size M (9.00mm)

 

Gauge

Not critical – width without edging shouldn’t be much bigger than 6.5”

 

Abbreviations used

ch = chain

sc = single crochet

dc = double crochet

fpdc = front post double crochet

bpdc = back post double crochet

st = stitch

 

With Delft Blue:

Row 1 Ch 22, dc into 4th ch from hook and into ea ch across, turn (20 dc including beg ch-3)

Row 2 (RS) Ch 2 (counts as first hdc now and throughout), * skip next st, fpdc around next st, fpdc around skipped st , ch 2, skip 2 sts, repeat from * across ending with a hdc in last st, turn (2 hdc, 10 fpdc, 4 ch-2 spaces)

Row 3 Ch 2, bpdc around next 2 sts, * ch 2, skip ch 2 space, bpdc around next 2 sts, repeat from * across ending with a hdc in last st, (2 hdc, 10 bpdc, 4 ch-2 spaces)

Row 4 Ch 2, * skip next st, fpdc around next st, fpdc around skipped st, ch 2, skip ch-2 space, repeat from * across ending with a hdc in last st

Repeat rows 3-4 until scarf measures approx. 53” from the beginning ending with a Row 3

Last row (RS) Ch 3, dc in ea st and ea ch across. Fasten off. (20 dc)

 

Edging

With White

With scarf lengthwise and RS facing attach white with a sc in end st of Row 1. *Ch 5, sc in end st of next row, repeat from * across entire edge of scarf. Fasten off.

Repeat edging on other side of scarf being sure to work with RS facing.

 

Ruffles

With scarf lengthwise and with RS facing attach white with a sc by working around the post of the 2nd unworked DC of row 1 (between the cables) *Ch 5, sc around the ch-2 of next row (between the cables), repeat from * across entire length of scarf. Fasten off.

Repeat ruffle three more times working between the blue cables.

I don't think the pattern is that difficult at all. It does use fpdc and bpdc to create the cables but once you get the hang of that it's a simple pattern.

 

My friend Amie over at Nexstitch has wonderful tutorial videos to help with pretty much any stitch.
