Spiral Crochet!!

Recommended Posts

Thanks Rebecca! I was looking at something the other day and wondering... "How'd they DO that?" :D!

Now I know! :thumbsup

I've always thought the freeform crochet was pretty, but didn't know where to start, so I bought the "How to Free Form Crochet" from Annie's Attic. I find it informative and fun... and while I still plan on buying the "Fun with Freeform Crochet"... it boils down to using lots and lots of motifs and crocheting them together, or combining them with "traditional" crochet patterns. So now I'm having a :oops moment of "Why didn't I think of that?"

I love using spirals in my freeform crochet. They are really eyecatching! Try some contrasting texures as well as color. And when it's done, you can take a fun eyelash or some other delicate yarn and do a crochet chain or crab stitch along the surface of one of the spirals edges for even more texture!

Tricia, is that freeform book you mentioned by Margaret Huber? I've been wanting to hear more about that book. I have Prudence Mapstone's and Jenny Dowde's books, and have been really pleased with them. I taught myself to freeform from Prudence's book, and have taken classes since then.

And Stacy, you'd be surprised at how creative you are. If you just look at lots of examples of freeform, you absorb it. No two are the same and you can't really make any mistakes, so jump right in! And if it's the unlimited numbers of colors available that scares you, take a look at http://www.elegantcrochet.com for an example of a beautiful pink baby afghan, which I think she said cost her only $16 in yarn!

Here are some great FF sites:

Freeformers are very helpful with hints and advice. We want more freeformers out there! More for us to see!

OK ladies, some of you must remember this one.

It's a 4 color spiral on the back of a sweater / wrap done by Kristin Omdahl. She calls it SWIRL. It's a free pattern I just picked up this past year, but I don't have her site.

It starts with the spiral, which is what you would want.

I would say Google her name and you'll probably find her.

I've been wanting to use the spirals in afghan squares. I'm still designing it in my mind. I don't know whether I want to use one giant spiral with colors changing like the rainbow or individual motifs that could be carried along. Nothing urgent, but I find myself occasionally looking at quilt patterns for inspiration.

This would make a cool tablecloth, if done in threads instead of yarns. Maybe I will make one for my daughter's birthday next year. She loves the look of a tablecloth, but isn't really crazy about the old fashioned motifs we've found. Spirals in different colors would be right up her alley!
