Wearing a poncho

I just finished making a granny poncho out of some "Noueveau" Homespun yarn. I followed the pattern at Lionbrandyarn.com. I was really easy and fun to make. It turned out okay and I wore it to work today. I've never worn a poncho in my life but I've seen lots of women at work wearing them. So I decided to give it a whirl.

I have to admit I felt kinda weird wearing a poncho. I felt kind of like Clint Eastwood in " The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly". I don't really know why I felt so strange. No one said anything negative and by the end of the day I was okay with it.

Do you wear a poncho and did ya feel sorta funky the first time you tried out this fashion statement?

Yes I wear ponchos to work and have gotten lots of compliments especially when I tell them I made the poncho.

But I will tell you...I was kinda aprehensive the first day I wore one.

I have a tweed one, red one, white one, gold one all different patterns and yarn type.

I have one of thick heavy yarn with a turtle neck that I wear as a coat and take it off when I get inside. The others I wear all day.

I have a large chest and personally think I look like a fool in them. I feel like I look preggers. My sister wanted to make me one but she also feels a bit silly wearing them. Depending on the style, I might wear one though.:D!

This is definitely NOT an effect I need to perpetuate! With four kids born within 5.5 years I'm very cautious now about wearing anything that might make me look "in the family way" lol!

I still want to make myself a poncho though ... I'm curious as to whether I can pull it off, because I love them. We'll see!

I made the granny poncho too from lion brand. I did mine in pastel shades and everyone LOVES it but they all say it's so fancy. I wear it when it's too warm for a jacket but too cold for a sweater. Kind of in between look. I'm looking forward to spring when they feel more appropriate.

I am also one of those people who feels weird wearing them. I made myself a black one, but I usually wear it around the house to stay warm. I don't wear it in public very often. I'm big (size 18) so sometimes I feel like I look like I am wearing a muu-muu.

The only person to comment negatively was my "little" brother. He said something along the lines of being "a slave to fashion" -- which he knows is NOT the case with me! LOL! I ignore him -- little brothers are supposed to be boogers -- even when they're 27. :rollin

IMHO a poncho done from worsted wt in a bulky or dense stitch is best worn outdoors instead of a jacket - I think you feel less bulky that way. A poncho that is lacy or light weight (because of using a thinner wt yarn) is better for indoors. If I wear a worsted wt. poncho indoors I feel like I'm wearing an afghan. That's a lovely, comfortable thing for sitting at home, but I think at work it would feel and look cumbersome. A work poncho should probably be thinner and of a bit fancier or classier yarn than afghan yarn. It should also be a bit more streamlined. Even on a woman of larger size, I think she should go with a streamlined poncho instead of a loose, wide one. I think that's the rule for plus-sized women, isn't it? Go with form-fitted and sleek and show off your "attributes"? ;)

I saw a lady today at WalMart that was wearing a long floral print dress w/ slit in the side and a black lacy poncho over it. She had a kind of a goddess thing going and it worked for her.

I am quoting some fashion specialist off television. If you are heavier or have a large bust, use a poncho that is asymmetrical or has a V in front. They are more slimming. As I have been pretty heavy lately, ahem :hee , I have an asymmetrical poncho I made that gets rave reviews everytime I wear it. People stop me in the stores constantly to get a closer look. One girl chased me down and took me to her mom to say, "This is what I want you to make me!"

I want to post a picture for you, but I am just released from the hospital from surgery and not up for figuring all the technical stuff out. Soon though. I used that expensive fancy suede-look ribbon yarn for the fringe. It is gorgeous.
