"snowflake mondays" a past post i had seen UPDATE WEEK #4

tangled up

Recommended Posts

Sorry about my snowflake. I've been having kidney problems and doctor visits and tests and such got in the way of trying it out. I'll try to get it done up this week. It uses beads, but can be done without the beads, so I'm hoping to do it both ways and see which works the best.

Linda, no worries, take it easy (I did not mean to give any pressure :blush)

I hope things are better with your kidneys :( , let us know how you are going :hug.

Hi everyone,

Well I've done it! I'm caught up. I have 20 snowflakes, some of which will go on my blocking board today - the rest tomorrow.

I found a slight problem with one of the patterns I posted. I hope Marika can answer a question about Austrailian crochet directions that may help clear things up.

Marika, I know there are Brittish terms and American terms. Do Austrailian crochet patterns use a system similar to Brittish terms?

If so, on week #19 Americans will need to adjust the way they read the pattern. The DC's are sc, tr's are dc's, and the tr tr's are dtr's. (I think!)

It might be better if I add an alternate pattern for that week.

I like this one: http://www.angelfire.com/or/birdbrain101/snowflakes/doilysnowflake.html

Please let me know what you want me to do.

Happy crocheting,

:cheer YAY! Congratulations, Nancy :) :) :clap

In answer to your question - Australian terms and British terms are pretty much the same. Really the only difference is that you translate down a stitch (if that makes sense) - so for Aussie dc, read US sc; Aus htr = US hdc; Aus tr = US dc; Aus dtr = US tr and so on. [Current terminology uses sl st the same and there is no Aus sc]

(Older patterns have no sl st - Aus sc = US sl st).

We can post an alternate pattern or just add a note that it is UK/Aus terms and post a link to a conversion chart... if you want to go the second option, I'm happy to handle that if you want me to :).

Thanks Marika! I'd appreciate your help. I didn't have any trouble following the pattern but I've used British patterns before and when I noticed the chain count didn't match the stitch it was representing I adjusted my thinking. LOL

Maybe we'll save the alternate pattern for another week.

PS. Just wondering if you got an email from me? I sent one but I'm not sure it went through.

Hmmm... I got the Ravelry info (thanks :) I've already made some use of it and felt some yummy yarns :yay). I replied once via Crochetville form and once directly (I think... you know me, I always have more to say :D)...

If there was anything after that, I did not get it... let me know, I'll check my junk folder and also see - my son deleted a bunch of unread messages today (including a pattern for testing :eek) but I thought I recovered most of those...

Beautiful work, Nancy :manyheart and beautiful photograph - I love them all laid out on the burgundy background.

You've got me itching to do some more of those again! We've picked some lovely flakes, haven't we ladies?

:cheer Go, Nancy!

Thanks Marika. I had some free time on my recent vacation while my sister was driving. We took turns. That's how I was able to catch up.

Just incase anyone is wondering the photo has them lined up in order.

Top row = weeks 1 -7,

Middle row = weeks 8 - 13.

And bottom = weeks 14 - 20.

:manyheart Beautiful Nancy! Great presentation also.

I am getting behind due to warm weather, ds's appointments, planting a new garden, the holiday weekend & other things going on but I hope I can start getting caught up this wk.

Thanks for all the compliments but like Marika said, "We pick very nice patterns!" LOL So, THANK YOU to all for the great choices.

I like them all but my favorites are # 7 (Marika's), # 12, and #19 (I think it's the #30 thread in it).

The background is just a piece of felt, I had left over from making a Halloween costume, thrown over the back of a chair. It works just like a felt board.

Anyone have a pattern for this week? :D

Hi, everyone. I found the following pattern and have been trying it out. It's a beaded snowflake that works up very nicely without the beads. With a bunch of ad libbing it works up very nice with the beads too.

http://www.karpstyles.com/crochet/beadsnow.html

If no one else has a suggestion, then I suggest this one.

I've been going through the patterns trying to figure out which I've done and which I still have to do. It seems like I've been doing multiples of the ones I like and a bunch of ones that I liked that weren't on the list and haven't done an awful lot of the ones that were on the list. I've got some of them done now, but an awful lot of them still to do. Call me a procrastinator royale. :lol :lol :lol

Hi everyone,

I was wondering how to starch a beaded snowflake. I used elmer's glue (watered down) to block my other snowflakes but I wonder if I should try a different starch so the beads keep their sparkle?

Some ideas I had:

1. Use traditional laundry starch and try to wipe the starch off the beads with a cotton swab before the starch is completely dry.

2. Use the watered down white glue but pin the damp (water only) snowflake on the blocking board and then apply the glue with a paint brush trying to avoid the beads.

Any other ideas?

Or is there a simple answer that I'm missing? LOL wouldn't be the first time. :lol

:flake:flake:flake:flake:flake:flake

PS. The beaded snowflake pattern is gorgeous! I'm going to need a starch technique that works because I'll be making lots of these. Thanks Linda! :hug

Happy crocheting,

I'd say that option 2 would probably be the better option - I'd wash and rinse the flake per usual, then block it and paint with the glue solution - you may have to do one side dry partially and then flip and do the other side if it is too difficult to saturate the flake neatly with the brush missing the beads...

The other thing to consider is found here. She reckons that glue stiffened flakes lose some of the sheen of the thread and recommends starching for flakes without added glitter... (no recommendations on beads, though). Her info is great, though, I highly recommend a read through if you have not already done so... If you used her starch solution you could follow the same process as with the glue solution above...

I'm going to try the glue/paintbrush method on this one and decide if it works for me. The link has some very good, practical advice but I've used starch before - luckily my local Mom & Pop grocery store had some old fashioned starch - but I was unhappy with the longevity of the starch even when used full strength and I'm in Pennsylvania not a tropical climate here!

4th of July in PA = :wbrr:sman:wbrr :laughroll

Or it usually seems that way!

I'll let you know how it works, thanks,

I found two snowflakes that are different from the usual ones we've been making. If you like them how about #1 for this week and #2 for next week.

http://i130.photobucket.com/albums/p280/busy-bee-lmt/DCP_1203.jpg

There are no picots at all in #1.

Ummm, while I am happy to go with different snowflakes, all I get on that link is your chart for a quilt-afghan (lovely, but not very threadable :think)...

Linda, I like these ones too. In fact we've already done snowflake #2 - it was week #19! I'd love to do Snowflake #1 for this week but lets remind everyone the terms used in the directions are Austrailian (same as British terms)

And I was thinking we were going to try a filet crochet flake from a graph! LOL Maybe another week?
