Super Stitch Sunday

Shawnee/OR

Recommended Posts

:wavingI just read about an event at DIY Network to knit/crochet a square for charity during the Super Bowl on February 4 (see below).

:ideaI say let's have a Crochetville Super Stitch Sunday CAL for crafting during the big game. Will you commit to work on a crochet project for the "Crochetville Team"? If you want to do a square for charity, great! If you have a WIP in mind, marvelous! Another CAL, even better!

So, anyone interested? Post if want to join, and then share FO pictures afterwards. Come on, there's lot of crochet time between all those great commercials!

If you prefer to make squares on Super Stitch Sunday and want to send them to me, please send 7" squares in your favorite pattern and colors by 2/14/07 and I will assemble a package to send off from the Crochetville Team! If you feel so inclined, this football square would be hilarious!

I don't mind posting my mailing address here since it's a po box:

SOME INFO FROM DIY NETWORK ON THEIR "KNIT" EVENT: It's Super Knit Sunday! On February 4, DIY Network is staging a "Knit In" to encourage needle arts enthusiasts to knit or crochet a square for charity. We're showcasing a marathon of DIY's Knitty Gritty to kick-off our year-long initiative with Warm Up America!, a charitable organization dedicated to the creation of handmade shawls and blankets to help those in need.

We're challenging all knitsters to create small squares that will eventually be sewn together into blankets to be distributed to women’s shelters, nursing homes, and daycare centers. So leave football fans to watch that "big game," and pick up your sticks and a bit of yarn, and knit a square!

This seems like a good idea.

I'm glad you included info on when this is happening as I don't actually know this date. :eek

I'll come up with a project. Can anyone tell me the times this would be. Is there a time we would start and stop?

the last time I had a TV it seemed that there was a pre-pre-pre-pre-pre-pre-game show. :loco:hook

If we are making squares for "Warm Up America", is there going to be someone to collect them all and mail them in, so that Crochetville will be represented? I am considering making a few squares for WUA as I am still working on my Blitz projects for February.

:thinkI've never thought about trying to collect the squares .. would that be wasteful to mail them twice? Or, can you submit them noting "Crochetville" on the tag? Let me know what you all think. If you want to send them to me, PM me for my address.

Shawnee, I would have no problem sending you my squares....when I get them done. I wonder what everyone thinks about this???? It would be nice to get a pile of them together and send them all at once....representing the generosity of Crochetville. Otherwise they would just "dribble" in to the W U A people.

Most of what I make ends up at a charity somewhere but this time I am going to create a complete Event for my Dora Doll.

I feel like I did for the knitting Olympics... can't wait to go now. Time to start designing.

To crochet or knit "perfect" Warm Up America! sections, cut a 7" by 9" cardboard template. Use the template as a guide; it's easier to handle than a measuring tape and great for kids.

BASIC CROCHET SECTION PATTERNS

Crocheting Patterns

Materials: Worsted-weight acrylic yarns

Gauge: 9 stitches = 2 inches

Finished size: 7" by 9"

.Hook: Size G crochet hook or size necessary to obtain gauge

BASIC SINGLE CROCHET

Chain 30 for the foundation chain.

Row 1: Single crochet in 2nd chain from hook, and in every chain in the foundation row. Chain 1 and turn your work.

Row 2: Working under the 2 top loops of each stitch in the previous row, single crochet across the row. Chain 1 and turn.

Repeat Row 2 until piece measures 9". Fasten off.

BASIC DOUBLE CROCHET

Chain 27 for the foundation chain.

Row 1: Double crochet in 3rd chain from hook and in each chain of the foundation row. Chain 2 and turn your work.

Row 2: Double crochet in each stitch across the row. Chain 2 and turn. Repeat Row 2 until piece measures 9".

Fasten off.

SHELL STITCH

Chain 31 for the foundation chain. (This stitch requires multiples of 6 chains plus 1.)

Row 1: Work 3 double crochets in the 4th chain from the hook. *Skip 2 chains. Single crochet in the next chain. Skip 2 chains, then work 5 double crochets in the next chain.* (You've created your first shell.) Repeat the sequence of stitches between the asterisks (*) across the row, ending with skipping 2 chains and 1 single crochet in the last chain. Chain 3 and turn your work.

Row 2: Work 3 double crochets in the 1st single crochet. *Work 1 single crochet in the center double crochet of the next shell, work 1 shell of 5 double crochets in the next single crochet.* Repeat the sequence of stitches between the asterisks (*). End with 1 single crochet on top of the turning chain. Chain 3 and turn your work.

Repeat Row 2 until piece measures 9".

Fasten off.

FLYING "V's"

Chain 33 for the foundation chain.

Row 1: Double crochet, chain 2 and single crochet in the 4th chain from the hook. *Skip 2 chains, then work 2 double crochets, chain 2 and single crochet in the next chain.* Repeat the sequence between the asterisks across the row, ending with 1 double crochet in the last chain. Chain 2 and turn.

Row 2: Work 2 double crochets, chain 2 and then work 1 single crochet stitch in the first chain 2 space of the previous row and in each chain 2 space across the row, ending with 1 double crochet in the last chain. Chain 2 and turn. Repeat Row 2 until piece measures 9".

Fasten off.

LITTLE SCALLOPS

Chain 33 for the foundation chain.

Row 1: Skip 2 chains, and double crochet into next chain. *Skip 2 chains and work 1 single crochet and 2 double crochets into the next chain.* Repeat the sequence of stitches between the asterisks until the last 3 chains. Skip 2 chains and single crochet into the last chain. Chain 1 and turn.

Row 2: Work 2 double crochets into the first stitch. *Skip 2 double crochets, then work a single crochet and 2 double crochets into the next single crochet.* Repeat the sequence between the asterisks until the last 3 stitches. Skip 2 double crochets and single crochet into the top of the turning chain. Chain 1 and turn.

Repeat Row 2 until piece measures 9".

Fasten off.

ALTERNATING HALF DOUBLE CROCHETS

Chain 31 for the foundation chain.

Row 1: Half double crochet into the 3rd chain from the hook, and into each chain across the row. Chain 2 and turn.

Row 2: Skip 1 stitch. *Work 1 half double in the back loop of the next stitch and 1 half double in the front loop of the next stitch.* Repeat the sequence between the asterisks, ending with 1 half double worked into the top of the turning chain. Chain 2 and turn. Repeat Row 2 until piece measures 9".

I feel I am asking a ridiculous question :embar but..I have read to send 7" squares. Then on one post it says to use a 7"x 9" template to measure because it is easier. I want to do the correct thing. What am I misunderstanding?:think

This is my first "square" to try. Figured it was a good time to learn.

Thanks

Sorry for the confusion. The Warm Up America people suggest making "sections" sized 7" x 9", which I think is more relative to knitted :knitafghans. If you're going to send your crochet creations to me, I would suggest making a square since we have so many adorable patterns available in crochet (including that funny football one).:hook The goal for WUA is to make 63" blankets, which I can do with our squares if I get enough.
