Ugly yarn help

funkyreporter

Question

Okay. Always one to want to try something new ~ and thinking I might being doing something moderately helpful (that I would benefit from) ~ I bought quite a bit of yarn (about $50 worth) from a not-to-be-named source on eBay. It is advertized as 'bleached recycled raw silk yarn' something-or-another. I have owned garments made of raw silk and thought I knew what raw silk was.

Well, well. This stuff is apparently made from what they sweep up off the floor when making other garments in Nepal (they said something to that effect) and the ladies spin it into yarn. So far, so good. So it arrives and I must say this is quite the ugliest yarn I have ever seen. I was going to tea dye it, but it is already the color of uck. It is coarse and gritty, thick and thin, really spun tight so you have to find a way to dangle it literally about every two feet or it starts winding up on itself. I did a swatch about 25 chains long (had to use an N hook, even though parts of it 'skinny-down' to thread size) and then turned it and did a double crochet, chain one, skip a stitch, double crochet thing. It looks suspiciously like a fishnet... and not in a good way. Like a ropey, been dragging behind the boat, got barnacles on it fishnet.

I have quite a bit of this stuff - I think over 1,000 yards, maybe 2,000 - two bags. Any suggestions on what to do with this stuff? It comes with a disclaimer that due to the 'delicate nature of the yarn' (yeah, right) it should not be made into a garment that is to be 'worn roughly'. So an actual fishnet is apparently out of the question.

I will await the pattern suggestions to come flooding in...

The Fug thread strikes again! :clap

How about a traveling Fug project? You know, like the traveling hook project, but people chronicle the adventures of Fug as he travels the world. By now, we are all dying with curiosity to see Fug in person. Or is it just me?

Shelle, I LOVE that picture of Fug shaking his head(?) "no-no" before being packed away to be sent back to Paulette. And it warms the cockles of my heart to know that Fug now has siblings. :manyheart You really outdid yourself.

Shelle- seriously, you're gonna be FAMOUS :bow:fame over this! And just think, You have Paulette and her impulsive e-bay habits to thank for it all! Don't forget her when you make it to the BIG time!!

I can't believe you mentioned the traveling Fug!!!!! When Shelle first got him on the Greyhound bus to travel here to California and I saw the pictures of how upset he was to go, shaking his little Fug head back and forth (actually, he's just a head, but whatever) Shelle and I agree on joint legal and physical custody - so I knew he'd be logging some frequent flier miles...

Then it occurred to me others would want to experience the sheer joy and bliss of just being in the mere presence of Fug, and I even thought of suggesting it, but then I thought, Nah, these people already think (know?) I'm off my crackers so if I suggest a traveling Fug...

But, hey! Fug's a traveling man! Yeah, there will be a few kinks to work out... liability waivers, etc., if a person requesting a Fug visit has small children or pets in the house neither Shelle and I can be responsible... (you know my cat is gone)... then again, if someone's looking to eradicate a family of possoms... hmmm.... this could get interesting...

Shelle, whatya think?

You guys read my mind!!!!! :eek I was planning to suggest the same thing! I know there are several here who love Fug, and have the sense of humor it requires to be involved with a Traveling Fugly Basket. I even thought it would be neat to do this: I start one, and each person adds a new row (whatever fugly yarn they want to use), then sends it on. The last one could post a pic (or send it back to me & I'll do it). We would attach a card to document who did which row, and of course the State they live in. Whaddaya think? I bet even Jimbo up in Washington would love to join in. Does he crochet? Or just make the hooks? Anyway, this could be fun! We'd have to PM our address to the sender. I haven't worked out all the details, but I'm sure we could figure it out. I'm sure Donnalynn, Paulette and I are "in". Anybody else want to join? Thoughts?

It's a strong possiblity! Just be warned it's wacky to crochet with! I made a lamb pillow and the fur part ends up in an odd pattern. Here's a pic:

Ok... well I TRIED crocheting with this stuff and it just wasn't gonna happen... soooooo... I picked my fugliest acrylic yarn in my stash (it's wonderfully orange/brown/yellow verigated and probably older than me!) and I am using my smallest (blue) Knifty Knitter loom. So my addition to the Fug family will be 60's retro knifty Oasis voodoo fug LOL

Please count me in! It would be soooo awesome to meet him in person! I just got some MoonPies. Maybe I'll "throw some in" when Fugly gets here. Will he eat MoonPies?

I can take him to Manhattan and show him around, too. "That's the Statue of Liberty, Fugly" "This is Times Square, Fugly. What do you think?" "Here, Fugly, This is Mayor Bloom....NO, STOP IT, FUGLY, NOOOOOOO!" :devil

Oohhh.... I wanna play..... :clap

Count me in too. It's almost like the Flat Stanley projects that the kids do in school. Or the class teddy bear that spent a weekend at each kid's house.

We can include a journal for Fug to write about his adventures around the world. I volunteer to take Fug on his first camping trip, he can bunk with the dog :dog or maybe the bunnies. :rabbit Or maybe in the shed with a pile of old dog chains and some spare parts for the golf cart. That's probably better, the kids are attached to the bunnies.

I'll plan some fun activities and promise to keep him out of the casinos, they are no place for a young, impressionable Fug to be!!!

Okay, sounds like FUN!! Just remember, each person has to box him up (with a few nuts & bolts to snack on during the trip), and pay postage to the next person on the list (can be sent parcel post - cheapest). Paulette, do you want to co-ordinate this, or shall I? :ideaHere's my thought: I think we should put each person on a list. Put the ones that have stated they want to "play" in numerical order. They get to keep the Fug for a week. When the person's week is up, they send it to the next person on the list. You'll PM your address to the one who's ahead of you, so they'll know where to send it. Paulette, if you can't bear to part with Fug, we can send Pismuckle or Digger. Each person will write a small diary of his journey. (I'll buy a little diary at WM - like kids use) Oh! And take a picture of Fug in a setting with you & your family, or wherever you take him, i.e. camping trip, your work site, taj mahal, etc.... Include the diary when you send it to the next person. Whoever goes on this jaunt, be it Fug, Pismuckle, or Digger, he should be returned to his original home at some point. Then, his custodial parent will be responsible for publishing the diary and pics to share with the other C-ville members. These are just my thoughts off the top of my head, but of course it's open to suggestions. :yell Yo! Paulette! Whadday say? This'll be fun!! :jumpyay

We're talkin' genuine Fugs only. I just posted the lamb pic to show what Voo-Doo looks like worked up. Actually, I think I knitted that, cause it was too hard to crochet with (forgive me for I have sinned):devil

Oh, this ROCKS!!!!

Original Fug wants to go on the trip!

:cheer Come on, People, VOTE FOR FUG #1!!!!

Original Fug is SO COOL! He is very photogenic, quite a fetching fellow indeed! And it just getting on to summer (at least here in the States) there could be lots of fun Fugly times ahead! He could pose with the family on camping trips, all over Manhattan, a day at the beach... and don't be fooled by Fug's innocent appearance - he's a player!

Fug is currently residing by my crochet chair (I stopped putting crochet hooks in him - he just hacks 'em back out again - kinda gross, but Shelle says, part of the Fug digestive process) And he's like a child... he watches EVERYTHING - thank goodness he can't talk! considering what I DO say on this forum, you can only imagine what I hold back!

So I can supply a cute little photo album (did I mention I do the scrapbooking thing too) so I've got lots of journals and such!

Oh, this is gonna be SO MUCH FUN!!!!!!

Shelle, if you want to tally the votes on whose traveling (SUBLIMINAL MESSAGE EVERYONE: VOTE FOR FUG #1 - YOU WON'T BE SORRY!) We'll figure it out where he's going first... we'll go through the thread and organize it in the order he was requested... unelss of course someone has a BIG trip coming up - couldn't you just see Fug on the back of a bike in that French bike race that I can't think of the name right now? (the one that Lance Armstrong always wins) or at a Rolling Stones concert! On a beach in the Bahamas!
