Hi, I was working on a wip I've had for a while and a thought struck me. I haven't posted a amigurumi pattern for a while. :eek:lol So after I got done on my wip I figured I see where the yarn and hook would take me. I'd like to introduce Mary Mermaid. :yes

Once there was this mermaid girl named Mary who dreamed of being a real girl and of wearing beautiful dresses. One time she was on her favorite rock talking to her seagull friends. The Seagulls instantly wanted to surprise her, because of the kindness she had towards them. So one day they saw this beautiful dress hanging on a clothes line. They took it off and brought it to the young mermaid and gifted it upon her. The mermaid instantly put it on and felt beautiful not only because of the dress but because it reminded her the sea isn't so bad because she had wonderful friends. :yes

This doll is crocheted from hair to fin. So the only thing you’ll be sewing on is the arms.



Materials:

Worsted weight yarn in 4 different colors (hair color, skin color, dress color, fin color) and a small amount of black (for embroidering face)
Size E hook
Yarn needle (for sewing, embroidering and weaving in ends)
Stitch marker (a piece of yarn will work to)
Poly-fil (for stuffing)

Finish Size: About 8 ½”h inches x 4”w inches at its widest

Notes:

With stitch marker mark first stitch of each Rnd moving stitch marker up as you go.

It is important that you know the difference between the front loop and back loop; and know how to work in just one or the other.

I used the invisible decrease when making the mermaid, but I figured I’d include a normal decrease in the Different stitches for reference.

Different Stitches:

Front Post Treble Crochet (FPTC): Yarn over twice. From front of your work insert hook into side of next st (or st that’s specified) going behind st and insert hook thru other side of st (basically going back to front of work), yarn over, pull yarn through sides of st to form a loop, [Yarn over, draw thru 2 loops] Do this 3 times.

Picot: Ch2, 1 sc in 2nd chain from hook.

Sc Decrease next 2 sts together: Insert hook in next st, yarn over pull up a loop, insert hook in next st, yarn over, pull up loop, yarn over, pull thru all three loops on hook.

Color Changing: Insert hook in next st, yarn over, draw up loop, yarn over with different color and pull thru both loops on hook.

Treble Crochet (TC): Yarn over 2 times, insert hook in specified st, yarn over, pull up loop, [yarn over, draw thru 2 loops on hook] Do this 3 times.

Incomplete Treble Crochet (INCTC): Yarn over twice, insert hook in specified st, yarn over, pull up a loop, [yarn over, draw thru 2 loops] Do this 2 times.

Directions:

Rnd 1: With hair color leaving a tail ch2, 6 sc in 2nd chain from hook crocheting over tail.

Pull tail taut to close hole from starting.

Rnd 2: 2 sc in each st around.
(12sc)
Rnd 3: 1 sc in each st around.
(12sc)
Rnd 4: [2 sc in next st, 1 sc in next st] Do this 6 times.
(18sc)

Note: The next Rnd is working in the sc made from working Rnd 2. Do not work into Rnd 4 at all for the next 2 Rnds.

Rnd 5: 2 FPTC in first sc made of Rnd 2, [1 FPTC in next sc made of Rnd 2] Do this 10 times, 2 FPTC in last sc made of Rnd 2, join with sl st to first FPTC.

Note: If you have trouble working the FPTC here’s a slightly alternate way to do hair. Work Rnd 1 and 2 as directed in pattern. Work Rnd 3 in back loops only. Work Rnd 4 as directed in pattern. AltRnd 5: 2 TC in first free front loop, 1 TC in each of the next 10 free front loops, 2 TC in next free front loop. (14TC)

Rnd 6: [Picot, sl st in each of the next 2 sts] Do this 3 times, ch5, sl st in 2nd chain from hook, sl st in each of the next 3 chains, sl st in same st, ch7, sl st in 2nd chain from hook, sl st in each of the next 5 chains, sl st in next st, [Ch 11, sl st in 2nd chain from hook, sl st in each of the next 9 chains, sl st in same st, ch 11, sl st in 2nd chain from hook, slst in each of the next 9 chains, sl st in next st] Do this 6 times, ch7, sl st in 2nd chain from hook, sl st in each of the next 5 chains, sl st in same st, ch5, sl st in 2nd chain from hook, 1 sc in each of the next 3 chains, sl st in joining sl st of Rnd 5.
(16 strands of hair and bangs)

Finish off.

Notes on Hair:

If you find that or don’t think the FPTC (or TC if doing AltRND 5) won’t cover Rnds 3 and 4 try doing Front Post Double Treble Crochet (or Double Treble Crochet if your doing AltRnd5) instead.

The Front Post Double Treble Crochet (FPDTC) is work just like the FPTC only when starting st you yarn over 3 times instead of 2, then work directions until you pull up loop through sides of sts, then you [yarn over, draw thru 2 loops] Do this 4 times instead of 3.

Double Treble Crochet (DTC): Yarn over three times, insert hook in specified st, yarn over, pull up a loop, [yarn over, draw thru 2 loops] Do this 4 times.

If you want a fuller head of hair when working FPTC you can work more than one into each st. The same goes for AltRnd 5 when doing TC you can work more than one into each free front loop.

For longer strands of hair all you have to do is chain more before working sl sts. If you do chain more you’ll just have more chains to work sl sts into.

Directions Continued………….

Rnd 7: Join skin color with sl st to first st of Rnd 4, 1 sc in same st, 1 sc in each of the next 17 sts on Rnd 4.

Rnd 9-11: Repeat Rnd 8 for Rnds 9 thru 11.

Stuff head some.
Rnd 12: [1 sc in next st, Sc Decrease next 2 sts together] Do this 6 times.

Rnd 13: [1 sc in next st, Sc Decrease next 2 sts together] Do this 4 times.
(8sc)
Rnd 14: 1 sc in each of the next 7 sts, 1 sc in next st color changing to dress color.

Finish stuffing head.

Fasten off skin color.

Rnd 15: Sl st in front loop of next st, [Ch3, sl st in front loop of next st] Do this 7 times, ch3, sls t in first sl st of Rnd, ch1.
(8 sl sts, 8-ch3 loops)

Note: Now your working in the back loops left free from working Rnd 15 in front loops only.

Rnd 16: 1 sc in first free back loop, 1 sc in each of the next 7 free back loops.
(8sc)
Rnd 17: [2 sc in next st, 1 sc in next st] Do this 4 times.
(12sc)
Rnd 18: [2 sc in next st, 1 sc in next st] Do this 6 times.
(18sc)
Rnd 19: 1 sc in each st around.
(18sc)
Rnd 20-24: Repeat Rnd 19 for Rnds 20 thru 24.

Rnd 25: sl st in front loop of next st, [Ch3, skip next st, sl st in front loop of next st] Do this 8 times, ch3, skip next st, sl st in first sl st of Rnd, ch1.
(9 sl sts, 9-ch3 loops)

Note: On Rnd 26 your working in back loops left free from working some sts in front loops only and into skipped sts.

Rnd 26: [1 sc in first free back loop, 1 sc in skipped st] Do this 9 times.

Stuff body.
After this Rnd you will join Rnds, until you start working with fin color.
Rnd 27: sl st in front loop of next st, ch2, 1 dc in same front loop, 2 dc in front loop of next st, [1 dc in front loop of next st, 2 dc in front loop of next st] Do this 8 times, join with sl st to first dc.
(27dc) (ch2 does not count as dc)
Rnd 28: Ch2, 1 dc in same st as joining, 1 dc in each of the next 26 sts, 1 dc in joining slst of Rnd 27, join with sl st to first dc.
(28dc) (ch2 does not count as dc)
Rnd 29: [ch3, skip next st, sl st in next st] Do this 13 times, ch3, skip next st, join with sl st to joing sl st of Rnd 28.
(14 sl sts, 14-ch3 loops)

Note Rnd 30 is worked into the sts you skipped from working Rnd 29. When working Rnd 30 work behind ch3 loops.

Rnd 30: Sl st in first skipped st, ch2, 2 dc in same st, [sl st in next skipped st, ch2, 2 dc in same st] Do this 13 times, join with sl st to first sl st.
(14 sl st, ch2, 2dc combinations)
Finish off.

Note: Rnd 31 is worked into the back loops left free from working Rnd 27 in front loops only. Fold skirt part of dress up for easier access to back loops.

Rnd 31: Join fin color with slst to first free back loop, 1 sc in same back loop, 1 sc in each of the next 17 sts.

Rnd 33: Sc Decrease next 2 sts together, 1 sc in each of the next 16 sts.

Stuff Tail Some.
Rnd 36: 1 sc in each of the next 3 sts, Sc Decrease next 2 sts together, 1 sc in each of the next 10 sts.

Rnd 37: 1 sc in each of the next 4 sts, Sc Decrease next 2 sts together, 1 sc in each of the next 8 sts.

Rnd 38: 1 sc in each of the next 5 sts, Sc Decrease next 2 sts together, 1 sc in each of the next 6 sts.

Stuff Tail Some.
Rnd 41: Sc Decrease next 2 sts together, 1 sc in each of the next 10 sts.

Rnd 42: 1 sc in next st, Sc Decrease next 2 sts together, 1 sc in each of the next 8sts.

Rnd 43: 1 sc in each of the next 2 sts, Sc Decrease next 2 sts together, 1 sc in each of the next 6 sts.

Rnd 44: 1 sc in each of the next 3 sts, Sc Decrease next 2 sts together, 1 sc in each of the next 4 sts.

Finish stuffing Tail.
Rnd 45: 1 sc in each of the next 4sts.

Rnd 46: You have 8sc, fold bottom of tail (or last complete Rnd) flat, Now from the front of the mermaid only 4 sc should be visible. Now to close the hole you’ll *insert hook in next st also going thru st behind it, then work a sc.* Repeat the following 3 more times. This should close up your mermaid so no stuffing will get out.

Rnd 47: ch1 and turn, 1 sc in each of the 4 sts.

Fin: Ch3 and turn, 3 TC in first st, ch2, sl st in last TC made (first Picot on Fin made), INCTC in same st, INCTC in next st, yarn over draw thru all 3 loops on hook, 1 TC in same st, ch3, sl st in same st, sl st in next st, ch3, 2 TC in same st, ch2, sl st in last TC made (Second Picot on Fin made), INCTC in same st, INCTC in next st, yarn over, draw thru all 3 loops on hook, 2 TC in same st, ch3, sl st in same st.
Finish off and weave in ends.

With black embroider eyes and mouth onto mermaid.

Arms: (Make 2)

Rnd 1: With skin color leaving a tail ch2, 6 sc in 2nd chain from hook crocheting over tail.

Rnd 2: [2 sc in next st, 1 sc in next st] Do this 3 times.

Stuff hand.
Rnd 5: Sc Decrease next 2 sts together, 1 sc in each of the next 3 sts, Sc Decrease next 2 sts together, 1 sc in next st, 1 sc in next st color changing to dress color.

Rnd 6: Sl st in front loop of next st, [ch3, sl st in next st] Do this 6 times, ch3, join with sl st to first sl st, ch1.
(7 sl sts, 7-ch3 loops)

Note: Rnd 7 is worked in the back loops left free from working Rnd 6 in front loops only.

Rnd 7: 1 sc in first free back loop, 1 sc in each of the next 6 free back loops.

Rnd 8: 1 sc in each st around.

Stuff arm as you go, no more stuffing after Rnd 11.
Rnd 9-11: Repeat Rnd 8 for Rnds 9 thru 11.

Rnd 12: Sc Decrease next 2 sts together, 1 sc in each of the next 5 sts.

Rnd 13: 1 sc in each st around.
(6sc)
Rnd 14: 1 sc in each st around.

Rnd 15: Now your going to close up arm so the stuffing can’t come out. You have 6sts; flatten last Rnd on arm, now only 3 sts should be visible from front of arm. *Insert hook in next st also going thru st behind it, work 1 sc.* Repeat 2 times more.

Finish off leaving a very long tail for attaching to body.

Sew one arm to Rnd 18 (or 3rd Rnd of sc in dress color) on each side of mermaid.
