Auction Results - Charity Square Along Afghan

Recommended Posts

The school auction was last Saturday night. Attendance was down since there were a lot of other things going on in town (including the public school's girls' basketball team winning the state championship. I went to it and made it back, though.).

The afghan pictured here, or at least linked to, went for $37. Not exactly what I wanted but ok. I put 2 other afghans in, one was a 5 1/2 hr afghan (3 strands) and a 4 1/2 hr afghan (3 strands instead of 2) in football team colors. They went for $7 each! I was really bummed. The yarn cost 3 times that for one of them and twice that for the other. And believe me, it took more than 10 total hours to make those misnamed things.

Next year, I'll make scarves and maybe 1 "fancy" afghan. I think part of the problem was the way they displayed them or didn't display them. They left them folded. You just don't understand how big and pretty they are unless they're at least hanging in half. Next year, I'll set the thing up myself.

The 5 1/2 hr afghan was actually just used as an example. I made it for my son using Miami Dolphins colors (had to make it about a foot longer than "normal"). I said that I'd make the buyer one of their own in any 3 Red Heart SS colors. The buyers were friends of ours (small town...everybody's a friend) and have 2 daughters. So, instead of a big afghan, I'm making 2 smaller ones. I like making things specifically for people I know. Makes it special that way. I guess it's almost a prayer afghan....

Just thought I'd update this. I've finished one of the little ones and 2/3's done with the other one. I'm also working on one for our living room. My SIL made us one like it years ago and I use it all the time on my half of the bed. Now that I know what's going on, I was able to figure out the pattern. It's done in lengthwise rows (along the long edge). 2 rows of DC then 2 rows of DC cross-stitch. I think that's what it's called anyway. Skip a stitch then DC in the next stitch then come back and DC in the skipped stitch. It's pretty simple but it's a lot of stitches. I'm using an H hook and RHSS Claret.

thanks for reading...

I finally finished the afghan I started months ago. I definitely have a better appreciation for all the work that goes into one of these things. I loathe weaving the ends then trimming and re-trimming. Each square had 2 ends plus 2 more after I put an edge around them, all 48 of them. There's a lot of sewing that goes into it too. Then, 3 rounds of dc around the whole thing. After washing it (Red Heart SS), it turned out great.

I think I'm more proud of this than any of the other things I've made. It was by far the most work I've put into any one thing. It wasn't difficult, just time consuming.

The kid dwarfing the afghan is my 6' 2" son (just 14 yrs old). I probably should have used someone smaller.

I'm planning on donating the afghan to our Christian school for its annual auction. I'm anxious to see how much it will bring. I don't know if the fact that a man did it will help or hurt. I guess we'll see...

That is just totally gorgeous! The colors are classic and the patterns of the squares are beautiful, everything about it is just perfect! You have every right to be bursting with pride over that one! :clap

Wow! That is beautiful, I love to see things men have made. You sure did yourself proud, I hope it sells for a lot. I wanted to teach my hubby to crochet and he looked at me as if I had lost my mind. I can't believe the men that think crochet is a woman thing. Huh!

The colors and textures and just beautiful. Good luck at the auction, this should bring a nice sum. It shouldn't make any difference if it's done by a man or a woman, it's a beautiful piece of hand-made craftsmanship.

:nworthy Thanks for all the positive comments. I think I'll be fine once the swelling in my head goes down....

The tan and green are unofficial school colors. We've used red for lettering on tshirts and stuff so I added the burgandy (RH Claret) to accent it. My wasn't sure about adding the red but I did it anyway. She's usually right about colors though. I often get "those" looks after I've dressed myself in the morning.

thanks again
