That's a beautiful dress! I did a search and Gidge Hart has a crochet group on yahoo called Gidge's Crochet. If any one joins and the pattern is for sale let us know please.

Nikster 1983, it's great you don't give up! At the beggining it's often more difficult if you do something new, no matter if it's your first doily or afghan. I still remember my aunt watching one of my first angels... She was watching every detail of his dress, not saying a word... Finally she said: "There is something strange in it and I don't know what... How did you do it?" (and mind it, she is "crochet specialist!)

Finally she realised that I made the pattern left side up, so all the stitches were "upside down". Don't ask me how I managed to do something like it - I was learning.... :D

that1girl - the dress is beautiful! If I had some little girls in my family, I surely would try dolls' clothes.

Hello Ladies! I am going to start working on my bed spread again tonight progress is slow. But I figured that I would show you all a couple of the dolls that I have done if you don't mind. The first one is for my oldest daughter and the other one is in my room.

Cool! You know the rectangle formula, right? The center should be the length of the difference of the final measurements of the 2 sides. Since you are working in the round, each side grows by the same amount. Example, if you want a 3'x5' piece, start with a 2' center; as it grows one set of sides is ALWAYS 2' longer than the other.

I only mention this because the question has come up more than once in the Help section. I would hate to see you get a bunch of rows into it and realize it wasn't coming out right...

I am in LOVE with you doilies!!! I can't make them I've tried and I just can't get it. I would love to be able to make them as I adore the way they look! But yours are just beautiful. I was looking at your album and I don't think I came across a single one I didn't like. They are all just amazing! Great work!! :c9

Aw shucks Melissa, thank you!

Have you tried making a simple doily or even lacy coaster in yarn? Size 3 thread is large-ish and might be easier to work with, and might be easier to transition you to smaller hooks/thread if that is the hard part.

The other thing 'hard' about doilies is that the pattern changes every row. That's one of the reason I recommended 'Cutie Pie' in an above post, the pattern does change but it is subtle. Pineapple patterns are (mostly) that way too.

While on vacation two weeks ago, my mom gave me some of my grandmother's crochet work that she had saved. I thought you might like to see some of it. These were done in size 30 thread with what looks like a size 14 steel crochet hook. I included the dollar bill so you could see how truly dainty they are.

Holey Moley Linda, those are gorgeous!! :manyheart

Thank you for sharing those, you have some beautiful heirlooms there. I have a 14 hook in my set but no way....:no

How is your filet piece going? I haven't been doing doilies, but I might start again now it's finally getting warmer here.

Mom gave me a whole stack of grandma's work. I didn't have any idea she had saved so many of her pieces. Just for the heck of it I decided to see if I had any of the size 30 thread in my stash. I found 2 whole balls of white and one partial white. I also found partials in three different colors. I'm working on a doily pattern that is one of my favorites and doing it with the size 30 thread and a size 12 hook. I couldn't get it started with the size 14 hook. After 5 rows it was almost up to 1 1/2 inches in diameter. :lol :lol :lol I'm still working on the big filet piece it's just been going slowly because I've been working on a couple of big projects that I just finished up. A king-sized flannel ghan that was a wedding present and a Double Irish Chain quilt that was my mom's Mother's day and Birthday gift. I'm planning on working on smaller and lighter weight things this summer, so the filet piece will be back in production again.

Your grandma's work is so beautiful! They are so precious!

For the last 2 months I didn't have much time for crocheting, but I made a few butterflies and 5 mug pads with hearts ( I planned a set of 8 at least). But I also started my holiday, so I hope to finish my tulip edging for the curtain and maybe to make some doilies....

I hear ya...I prefer size 10 but don't have any trouble with size 20....but 30 just seems soooo tiny.

I was surfing around somewhere yesterday and found links to some old crochet books (not antiquepatternlibrary.org, but they had some of the same titles). One of them had a reference section on gauge, and they STARTED at 30 and went up to 150...aak!

I finished the thread doily I was making using size 30 thread and size 12 hook. It turned out to be just barely 6" in diameter. The pattern says that it will be approximately 9" in diameter with using size 20 thread and a size 7 hook. I was unable to find any colored size 30 crochet thread so I picked up some 100% Egyptian cotton sewing thread that is size 30 - 50 and will try that and see how it works with the little needles now.

Melissa, I find that the older patterns are easier to follow than a lot of the newer patterns. I use the ones that I inherited from my grandmother from the 1950s. Most of them work well when done with size 20 crochet thread and a size 7 hook. You can frequently find them for sale on eBay. I'd check out some of the free crochet pattern sites, too.

Linda, that is so pretty and delicate! Nice use of color. I like doilies that pack a lot of design into small package.

Melissa, there is a site that has several well written, not-too-big doilies. One of the simplest is Cutie Pie Doily, I think that would be a good place to start. Check out the other patterns, too. His "Trish" doily is not for beginners perhaps, but the pineapples would be a good place to start, too.
