Hard case for crochet hooks?

Recommended Posts

I seem to prefer wooden hooks over metal or plastic but I am worried that they will break when I am carrying them around. Does anyone know of a hard case designed for (or suitable for) crochet hooks?

I use double-sided pencil boxes for mine. I pick them up at dollar stores and at Big Lots. I have one for my dpns, one for my steel hooks, one for my aluminum and plastic hooks, and one for my wooden hooks. I add multiples of notions in the extra compartments, such as small embroidery scissors (though now I wear my cutter pendant), yarn needles, tape measure, stitch markers, cabone rings, etc. I haven't had to pay more than $1.50 for any of them, and they work great. They also don't fly open when dropped, either.

I also posted this idea about a month or two ago, and had lots of great responses. I thought of getting used hinged bracelet boxes--you know, the kind tennis bracelets come in?--and perhaps recovering them with whatever fabric if they're beat up and using those for my hooks. I was able to find some at a local thrift store, but when I went back to get some, they were already gone. Also, it's yard sale season, so you can probably find some somewhere. It was even suggested that if you don't want your hooks to be loose inside this case, you could make an insert with cardboard, cover it with a coordinating fabric, and add elastic loops to it for the hooks. Then, you affix it to the inside of the box. Voila! A hard-shell hook case!

Thanks for the input everyone. I haven't seen any hard pencil cases here, they tend to be floppy, zippered, and shaped like animals or other objects.

I made a hard case once for a pennywhistle that I had, with pvc pipe lined with fleece and covered with denim. Maybe I'll try the same thing again for crochet.

You should be able to find the hard pencil cases in an art supply store or a store that carries art supplies because many times the cases are also used for paint brushes. Also look in the housewares section for a plastic food container or in the craft section.

I only have one wood hook, and it's a G so nice and fine.

I have it in with the rest of my aluminum hooks in my 'hook rollup' case that I made out of fabric. It is taller than the others, but I don't worry about it too much. I figure with it being wrapped up with everyone else, they all lend strength. The fabric also pads them a bit and prevents any scratching. I also have my pencil and snips rolled up in it too. Let me know if you want the pattern or I can make one for you (anyone).

There was one in Wal-Mart for a long time, not sure if they still sell it. I did see it in either or both Joann's and Michael's.

It's like this one only comes without the hooks. If it doesn't link up, just look for Crochetmaster:

There's this:

And this one:

If you only want to take a couple with you, a toothbrush holder works great.

If you have a Michael's, go there and look in the sewing/notions isle (I think that's where it was). They have these plastic containers that are big enough for glasses but can hold most anything you want. I bought a purple one. They have a silly name like Pop Offs or something

You'll be able to find hard pencil cases in July when they put school supplies out. If you don't want to wait that long, try office supply stores.

:)

A toothbrush holder! What a great idea, lol.

Unfortunately we in the UK have no Michael's, Jo-Ann's, Target, Wal-mart, etc...we have Hobbycraft but 90% of it seems to be for cardmaking and fake flowers. I do a LOT of craft supply shopping when I go to the US!

I have bought mine from places like borders bookstore or books a million. They have the ones like we used to have when we were kids and metal and last FOREVER.

I have also seen people make a tube from pvc pipe and a screw on end. some have even decorated the pvc with a thread case.

I made these holders for my hooks with Caron SS and an E hook. It'll protect them from getting scratched but not from breaking.

I remember a pattern like that on the net a while back. they suggested Smarties tubes or something like that. it was really neat. Must go looking again and see if I can find that.

I am sure that you might know where to find that pattern for a hook case where you crochet over a tube of some sort.

it is like the picture that was posted and I copied in my last post here. Can you remember where it might be?

i can't remember the name for it and my :google is getting nowhere. :sigh

Here's some nice wooden ones I've found. Would make nice knick-knacks when I re-organize my family room.

And then there's these new cardboard tubes from Knit Picks.
