that works up really fast

2 strands of ww yarn, an M hook and I was able to whip out 6 of these in the last 2 days.

cammohatclose.jpgI'm putting them in my anysoldier.com box. I'm going to try to squeak out one or two more before I have to go to the post office.

Here's one of hubby modeling it...shhhh he thinks he's going to be cropped out of it http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v201/ilexmi/cammohat.jpg

Ok, here it is!

I want to do more too, after Christmas.

I don't know if I can call it an original pattern, I just used the basic spiral hat concept.

I used Bernat ww acrylic in tan camo and black. I think Bernat is softer and perhaps a little more "plump" than Red Heart. The bonus is it's cheap and I was able to get 5 hats out of the 2 skeins together. I had enough black left over to do a 6th with a new skein of the camo. Camo is only 6 oz because it's an ombre, the black is 8 oz. So that made the hats cost only about $1 each.

So, without further ado <img border=0 src="http://img28.photobucket.com/albums/v84/crochetville/cutewink.gif" />

Oh, and I'm kinda partial to DH too. He looks better when he's not being hounded to model a hat first thing in the morning <img border=0 src="http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v84/crochetville/morningcoffee.gif" />

Quick Hat

2 strands worsted weight, same or different colors.

M hook

Mark beginning of each round. Do not join, just keep working around.

Chain 6 and join length of chain into a ring by working a slip stitch into first chain made.

Round 1 Chain 1 then work 12 sc into ring, working over long loose end.

Round 2 1 sc in each of 12sc of previous round, making sure you are no longer working over loose end.

Round 3 Work 2 sc in each sc to the end of round. You should now have 24 sc in the circle.

Round 4 Work 1 sc in each sc to end.

Round 5 1 sc in first sc, 2 sc in next sc *1 sc in next sc, 2 sc in next sc* repeat to end (now have 36 sc)

Round 6 & 7, 1 sc in each sc to end.

Round 8-16 will be done in HDC. One HDC in each stitch around.

Fasten off (I stich a few sc and then a few sl. St before fastening off)

Pull on long loose end at beginning to close hole. Weave in loose ends.

This is brimless and very stretchy. It looks narrow while you are working it, but will expand to fit some pretty big heads! If you want it longer/shorter just add/skip rows as you like.

  • 3 weeks later...

A little birdy just pointed me towards Bev's site that says hats for soldiers shouldn't be made with 2 strands of yarn, it would be too thick to go under their helmets. I wasn't aware of that, so I wanted to add that tidbit to this thread.

The way they came out, they don't seem overly thick, but I don't want anyone to spend time making something they can't use!!!

Sorry if I misled anyone!!!

Thanks Holly! In a previous post I said I wanted to try them, and I did...but I did use a boye J hook since I had no M - they turned out great and I made 2 for the homeless shelter and love them! Oh, yeah, I made one kind of last minute for our mailman-gave it to him on Christmas eve! Dar
