Dumb question

Recommended Posts

A motif is a term used to describe a small section of a pattern. It can be in different shapes and colors. You can have granny squares and motifs in the same pattern, they are generally used to fill in wholes in the pattern. I hope you understand what I mean.

With crochet, we have to consider the distinction between "motif" in the decorating world and its use in crochet.

A motif is a term used to name one square (or any shape) that is then put together to make your afghan, table cloth, runner or scarf type object.

...hence, the pineapple motif is a signature element of much of crochet but one square of a project that uses that pineapple is called a motif.
