twisty thread

I'm hoping for some tips to deal with twisting thread as I crochet. Things are going well but I keep having to stop and dangle my project to let the thread unwind. It's not a big deal when it is a bookmark, but if I were ever to attempt a doily, I don't think I would like that very much! I can just picture it unraveling each time I tried. Any suggestions??

I will be the first to stand up and say that perhaps I'm doing something wrong, but the end results always turn out like the should. I think. At the very least they look like the pictures in the books.

I don't know if this would work or not, but maybe try putting the thread on a paper towel holder (the kind that sits on the counter, not the hanging kind). That way the spool will turn and unroll the thread rather than....looping??? off the spool.

If nothing elese at least the spool won't roll away

That's probably exactly what it is doing, Holly, and I knew it too but it just didn't connect. The spool is usually laying beside me on the bed or sofa, where ever I'm stitching. I want to get one of those... I don't know what they are called... you hang the spool from them and they have a swivel so it spins around... HERE, a thread tender!! That would work, don't you think?

Rick thinks he may be able to make something for me after seeing the picture of it. Goodness knows we have enough swivels around here from fishing!

Doesn't that remind you of a toilet paper dispenser? Wouldn't that be cheaper? I actually saw (somewhere) a toilet paper dispenser attached to the lid of a plastic rubbermaid square bowl. The bowl held crochet hooks and supplies and the thread was put where the toilet paper usually goes. Here's a link that explains it better. You'll need to scroll down to the bottom of the page. Look for the "bright ideas" section. I'm still looking for the picture of the one I saw and if I find it, I'll post a link for it.

Yeah, cheaper is good. Searching on eBay I found a few things, and Rick is hunting wire today or something to insert in the tube to attach to the swivel. I've got lamps at both of my usual crochet hot spots, so I can clip the whole thing to the lamp and have at it. He thinks he can do it for about $1 worth of materials, just the wire really. Even a banana stand would work to suspend it from (provided you don't use it for bananas).

The toilet paper dispenser is a good idea too... hmmm... So many options!

Today I bought a wooden paper towel holder at Wal-Mart for $3.93. It holds the towels (and my thread) upright. We couldn't beat the price vs. buying supplies to make something ourselves. Now I just have to try it out!

:grouphug HI Ladies. What I did was get one of those wooden hangers for banana's. Put in a swivel hook, cut the "elbow'" (bent) end off a wire clothes hanger. Squeezed the open end together and slid a ball of crochet cotton on it. It spins around while I am crocheting. end of problem. Shirley:clap

I attempted my first snowflake last night and OMG the twisting was driving me nuts, lol. I'm so glad to find this post. I am also sitting the thread next to me and just pulling it over the top as I go... It's great to find so many great ideas for solving the problem.
