Crocheting & .... Beads?

Deb

Recommended Posts

As some of you know, I am currently working on a stole/wrap/shawl for myself. I am using TLC Amore yarn (black in color). I am looking for beads to crochet IN to the design (at either end - so I won't need them for a while yet). I'd like to use black ones; faceted maybe?

Here's the thing.. all I've been able to find lately are beads that have a small - no tiny - threading hole in the center. I'll never EVER <img border=0 src="http://img28.photobucket.com/albums/v84/crochetville/ohdear.gif" /> be able to get my yarn through them!!!

Does anyone have any great suggestions? Or maybe a link to a great resource?

Thanks! <img border=0 src="http://img28.photobucket.com/albums/v84/crochetville/veryhappy.gif" />

I get MOST of my beads from ebay, What you want would be something like was mentioned: pony beads. A example of those are the big plastic beads you find in the kits at Wal Mart. Here's some others I found on Ebay cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=10550&item=4102660355

These are glass. Just do some looking around on Ebay in the bead section I'm sure you'll find what you'd like to use- even if you don't buy off there you can get an idea of what type you like.

Another good place is Hobby Lobby or if you have a Tandy Leather close by(they don't have lots of beads but our local one has a good beautiful although expensive selection)

hmmmm, do you live anywhere a local bead store?

let me tell you what i did, and it might help:

i am making a shawl for my sissy for her wedding, there is a local bead store where she lives that has made her wedding jewelery, so what i did was mail her a picture of the pattern and a couple feet of the yarn i am using and she took care of finding matching beads that will fit my yarn.

i would think that any small shop around you would be willing to do the same. customers are their meal ticket, ya know?

i'm definately thinking that pony beads are not what you are looking for.... there is a catalog, bead and button which you can pick up at barnes&noble and the likes. they have OODLES of beads!! and you'll be able to order in bulk, which you'll likely need to do for a large number on a shawl... and they have a great customer service dept, that you can talk to over the phone and they will help --- they know their stuff!!

hope i was a help :rock

Thanks for the suggestions! <img border=0 src="http://img28.photobucket.com/albums/v84/crochetville/clap.gif" />

I've never purchased ANYTHING on Ebay... and I am a little timid about doing so. <img border=0 src="http://www.ezboard.com/images/emoticons/embarassed.gif" /> I don't know why. haha.

I did look there just now... and found some lovely black glass pony beads. <img border=0 src="http://www.ezboard.com/images/emoticons/smile.gif" /> Still nervous about doing it... but I probably will go that route.

Thanks again. <img border=0 src="http://img28.photobucket.com/albums/v84/crochetville/bounce012.gif" />

It's not so bad- of ALL the tons of things we have bought we have only had one problem.

hubby is long time ebayer and had only had one prob before that (that was a woman selling something "original" when it was a copy and not a good one)

Just read the feedback.

I've bought alot (almost ALL)of my beads and yarn on ebay.

One way to do the threading is to thread a regular needle with about four inches of sewing thread. Tie a knot in the thread. Loop the yarn through thread loop. Put a bead on the needle, push it down over the thread and then over the yarn. Granted, one still has to have beads that will fit over the yarn.....

I'm not familiar with the yarn you are using? Is it larger or smaller than regular WW? :bigsmile

Guess WHAT??? <img border=0 src="http://img28.photobucket.com/albums/v84/crochetville/rocking.gif" /> On my way home from the mall today, I drove home a different way, and what should I see???

<img border=0 src="http://img28.photobucket.com/albums/v84/crochetville/woohoo2.gif" /> A BEAD and YARN store!!! <img border=0 src="http://img28.photobucket.com/albums/v84/crochetville/woohoo2.gif" />

I made a u-turn at the next corner, and went back. I found some gorgeous beads that are NOT as big as pony beads... and the threading hole is PERFECT for my yarn! At $3.00 for 100, I feel that I really scored!

Because I had time constraints... I didn't get to stay and browse... but let me tell you.... I shall be going back to THAT store. Oh MY GoodNess!!! <img border=0 src="http://img28.photobucket.com/albums/v84/crochetville/clap.gif" /> Sooo many yarn choices... so little time.

*****

Sampler Lady - this yarn IS smaller in size than WW yarn... but not by much.

I know there's another place for this kind of link on the board... but I wanted to place this link on this thread... just because!

This is the website that belongs to the yarn/bead shop that I found today:

<a href="http://www.phebies.com/" target="_new">Phebie's Needleart</a>

They don't have too much information on the site... and NO pictures <img border=0 src="http://img28.photobucket.com/albums/v84/crochetville/scratchhead.gif" /> - but believe me.. this store is a treasure!

<img border=0 src="http://img28.photobucket.com/albums/v84/crochetville/veryhappy.gif" /> I can't wait til I have the time (and funds) to go exploring there!

The baby brother allowed me to borrow his digital camera to take some pictures. <img border=0 src="http://img28.photobucket.com/albums/v84/crochetville/photos.gif" /> Here's the needle and the beads, laying on top of my stole.

What you have there are called E-beads. They are equivalent to a 4 mm bead. If you want to find other beads for other projects that should give you some direction.

I make a lot of jewelry. This is the best place I've found to get beads.

www.firemountaingems.com/default.asp

I live in a small town. I'd have a 40 mile trip if I wanted to just browse through a bead shop. So, I get all my things online. I don't get beads from Ebay because you always take the chance that they are not as advertised. Fire Mountain is a great company to deal with.

Some bead sites call the beads you need "Rollers", some call them pony beads, and some call them Cherokee (or maybe another Indian name) beads. And glass is BEST, of course! :lol
