Baby Blanket Extravaganza

My mom makes baby blankets for charity, and the following is her output for August and September. The variegated next to the Halloween orange (spider stitch) one is Caron Simply Soft and just gorgeous (it's a sideways shell pattern). I don't know what she used on the purple and white ripple (dc), but it's just as soft so I guess that one is SS, too. She makes some in the same pattern, but different colors, in case there are little twins at the hospital. She loves to make these, and as she is retired, she has a lot of time on her hands--this keeps her out of trouble! ;) Seriously, she'd stopped crocheting because she'd made us all several blankets over the years, and I guess figured we didn't want any more. But I showed her all the different charities online, and she's very excited about making these. Plus we get to talk yarn and patterns now. Good mom-daughter bonding!

That is a lot of blankets! I just adore the pink and blue pair. They look like they work up quickly for blankets...and I keep blissfully thinking of fewer ends to weave in...lol.

Wow! Great looking blankets... She has definitely been busy! And it is such a nice thing to be making so many blankets for charities!

Can you give more info on the identical blue and pink blankets? the pattern and yarn used.

thanks,

Subha

Sure thing, Subha, I'll ask her this weekend; it's something she made up. Let's call it Felicia's Fast Baby Blanket. Speed is a premium for her--she gets bored easily. :lol It looks like it's just dc, and like she's been working in the back loop since I can see a little ridge on each row. Here's a close-up of the blue one:

Looks like she does 5 dc, ch 1, then 5 dc, and repeats. I'm not sure what she's doing at the beginning of the second row, maybe doing 3 dc, ch 1, then 5 dc, ch 1, 5 dc, repeat, to get the offset, which would hopefully work out to 2 dc at the end of the row, then you would ch 3 and begin with 5 dc on the next row. I know she's doing ch 3 at the end of the row because you can see the little bowing out of the 3 stitches. She didn't put borders on these, although the others have borders. It would work up super fast, and you could probably put a sc or dc border on it if you wanted. She made me a huge green one out of this pattern for my birthday this summer, and there's a photo of it in some thread here somewhere. Not sure if I kept it in photobucket and if I took a closeup that might be clearer.

I think she may have used some LB Pound of Love skeins I sent her for her birthday for these blue and pink and yellow blankies (the SS embroidery print and some beautiful mint green Softee were part of her birthday package, too. What do you get a 74-year-old who has everything? I decided this year it would be a box o' yarn, since she doesn't drive and only gets to the LYS when one of my sisters takes her.). But I can't be sure. I just sent her another box of Caron pounders, but since these are darker colors, the next set of blankets will be more autumnal and holiday--she's using the scarlet red now (her favorite color). The Caron isn't as soft as the LB Pound of Love, but I wash the blankets before we donate them to make sure ends won't pop out, and that should soften them up.

LOL! I didn't realize my neighbor's dog, Shane, was in the photos! He's a sweetie, but he's 4 months old and they are not training him at all. The other night he escaped out of their yard 5 times in an hour and a half! He wonders all over, and we're just 1 block off a major cross-town artery. I finally put him in my backyard becuase my neighbor stopped answering the door and locked the screen so I couldn't pound on it anymore to return him. I have a very bad feeling about the future of this pup (and I'm a volunteer with the Delta Society and our local Humane Society, so this is just breaking my heart). Patty

Thanks, DesertCrocheter for the quick reply! I'll try the instructions you have given and see if it looks like what your mom has made. If I get struck I'll ping you again. In the meantime if you talk to her, can you find out how exactly she made this beautiful "Felicia's fast baby blanket"?

Thanks,

Subha
