I told my math teacher about hyperbolic planes recently and now he's wanting me to give him more info and teach him how to crochet! It's really fun, and this stuff is really interesting!

Eeeek, I just had a nightmarish flashback to 10th grade geometry! Interesting sites though, thanks for sharing. Now I can show my daughters (who are both learning to crochet and in the 4th grade) yet another thing math can be useful for!

Thanks for these, Aidan! I've copied out the pattern for the fractal shawl -- I have some yarn I'd hoped to make a shawl from one of these days, and this is the pattern I want to use.You share the neatest stuff!;)

Don't know if you're familiar with Cliff Stoll, but I've always thought I'd love to order one of his Klein hats. He's one of my fave guys, and the hats are too cool.

ooh, Cliff Stoll is so cool! I love his book, The Cucoo's Egg - a fascinating (true) story about catching a computer hacker. :D

And I bought one of his Klein bottles for my brother who's a chemist. :)

And thanks so much for all the links - I had a great time last night going through them. :D

I loved that book, too. Have you read his others? They're equally interesting. I just get such a kick out of him. Bet your brother loved the Klein bottle!

Actually klein bottle hats aren't all that hard to make. Not long after I learned to crochet my dad decided he wanted one... here's the result:

Not the best pictures LOL. Now he wants another one, in Aggie colors... mind you, we live in Florida, so he'll never even wear the first one!

Wow! I ended up ordering one of the maze afghan patterns. I'm addicted to labyrinths, so I got a little giddy :)

that last link on aidan's post contained an additional link to this website:

Oh my! Those sites made me turn away and weep! I flunked out of my 11th grade Geometry class... I did so well in Algebra but just couldn't get Geometry... UGH! And NO, I never even looked at Calc!!! I don't care how pretty the pattern, there's no way I'm going to use that for crochet! I crochet to relax and have fun!!! But if this suits some people, that's great!!! We all have different methods and ways. This one just isn't mine!!!

P.S. I must add that I think it's a wonderful idea for kids in school to learn. I may put this on the back burner for when I have kids... Another great reason to teach kids to crochet!!!
