It looked like sports weight since you use an E hook. I guess just any size to give you the guage

However I went to the Bernet website and found that it said it's a size 4, worsted weight... http://www.bernat.com/product.php?PHPSESSID=ed4d5e5e3e7c68dd6f61d9aca7c540d3

So I'm not sure... the pattern says 2 ply... so that would seem smaller weight to me.

Maybe what you can do is start with the back, work a few rows and see if it is the width you want. If not try another yarn or hook. It wouldn't be a lot to frog...

Then when you find the hook and yarn you want, work up to the top where the neckline pattern starts. Since it's done in inches up to there, you can do where you really want to go. The neckline would be harder to work as it has a certain amount of rows, but doable.

Okay, I give up. Is it thread, fingering weight or sport weight cotton?

I am guessing that if you buy some of the new Eco-cotton yarns they would be about what you want. i am making a hat with some now and it seems about what you would want. I bought this a WM

Just generally... login (or join) at Lion Brand and check out this yarn substitution page

http://cache.lionbrand.com/cgi-bin/yarnInfo.cgi?equivalents=1

It gives you an idea of what yarn fits where and what you can substitute.

The pattern says Bernat Handicrafter cotton was used.:)

But you have to be careful to get the 2 ply version and not the WW version which is called by the same general name.

Didn't see any different version.:think How can you tell?

http://www.crochetmemories.com/crochet1.php -look under perle cotton-says 2 ply is equal to size 5.

Does handicrafter come in 2 ply anymore? It's a nice pattern. I probably have it somewhere!!

http://www.bernat.com/product.php?LGC=handicraftercotton is the fiber info on the yarn called for in the pattern. it is a worsted weight yarn.

Bernat (it seems) uses Handicrafter for all their cotton including the crochet cotton. The worsted weight Handicrafter is most definitely not 2 ply and is not fine.

I did see a very nice 2ply cotton yarn today but I can't remember the brand now. I knew I should have picked up one skein of it

Most patterns indicate the gauge giving the # of stitches per inch. Then you can look on the yarn label and see how close it is. IIRC, Bernat is pretty good about posting the stitches per inch for each of their yarns.
