Could you? Would you? Teach kids to crochet for $$?

I work at an elementary school. Every spring the school offers after school enrichment classes such as cooking, Spanish 101, gardening etc. Any staff member or community member may offer their skills and teach a class. The pay is $28.00 per hour.

I was thinking about teaching crochet to 4th grade and up. I think age 9-12 is a good age. Maybe. Am I asking for trouble? What sort of projects should I have beginning crocheter do?

$28/hr might be worth the headaches <img border=0 src="http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v84/crochetville/rotfl.gif" />

Are you allowed to charge a material fee? $5 should cover a ball of sugar n cream & hook they could keep. You could do something simple with them like cotton potholders or a long skinny headband.

good ideas holly...

i was thinking a dish cloth ... or even a simple granny square as a second project.. that opens alot of possibilities..because alot of things are made of squares..

a scarf is a good project too but maybe for the first time crocheter a little too much to see results and have something finished in a timely manner...start small so they can see the result then maybe something bigger..

I was eight when I learned... It took me a week or so to figure out tension and I was on a roll, I still have all the doll clothes I made. My neighbor taught me sc, dc, and in the round, and the rest i made up or figured out. I have turned to crocheting again and again throughout my school years and I think i'm stuck with this time.

I think a potholder or dishcloth is good idea...a little bit bigger and the girls could have a doll blanket, but something small will help them keep interest.

i think that would be awesome. i learned in the 3rd grade and boy was i greatful that my wonderful teacher mrs. olsen(sheesh i still remember her name after almost 40 years!!) taught all of us who wanted to stay in at recess and learn. i think this is a perfect age to teach. young minds pick things up reallllllly fast . good luck, let us know how it goes. vicki:sun

One of my girlfriends from Germany says they taught all the girls (maybe boys too?) to knit and crochet in grade school. It was part of their schooling. I don't know that they still do that but I thought it was kinda cool that she learned while that young. I want to say she specifically mentioned doing it while in the third grade but I'm not positive.
