You can use any star pattern for it too.  All the adorable-ness is in the color sequence and the star appliques.

That is sweet!  For those who can't see it because they don't have a Ravelry account, the person took this pattern, in these colors but a little brighter yellow, and added black eyes and outlined the stars in black.

I wasn't 'up' on Super Mario to remember the star ( I think I played the game a couple of times before he was super, on an arcade machine long ago LOL), but if you google 'super Mario star' you can see the shape/placement of the eyes.
