what to do next...

Recommended Posts

I know how to single, double, and 1/2 double stitch. I have made ripple blankets, but I want to try something new. I want to learn how to start new yarn without tying it, I want to make some of the beautiful things I see online, I want to learn how to make a granny square. OK where do I start, and what kind of yarn do I use.I was thinking pot holders? with cotton thread? please help me take the next step in crocheting thank you

You might get some inspiration and ideas from these sites:

http://www.nexstitch.com/index.html

http://www.yarncat.com/crochet.html

http://www.sarahanns.com/crochetworks/cwhome.html

or even http://www.crochetpatterncentral.com/index.php

Look at some of the auctions on eBay for crochet books for other ideas.

If you can think of an item, it can be crocheted. It doesn't have to be clothing or afghans or toys. The sky is the limit!

Thank you bgs, for the link to that thread. I think I will try that Russian Join next time. It sounds good.

As for anything new. Look at a pattern, see if you would like to try it. Most patterns have a list of all the stitches they use. And sometimes they show pics of what new stitches are. I taught myself to crochet new things by just picking up some new patterns.

If you like the idea of making dishclothes, there are a couple of books floating around out there that are 100-different clothes or along those lines. That'll give you lots of ideas. When I started out again a few years ago, I also picked up a book of 99 Squares. It did stuff other than the traditional granny square and I learned some new stitches that way too. (I haven't done all 99 by a long shot...)

Dishclothes are a good idea to learn new stitches. I did most of the 63 Sampler AFghan Squares as dishclothes and not an afghan. There is also a 24 Pattern Dishcloth leaflet out there. It's a great way to learn new stitches and make something quick.

Of course just deciding to make something helps. If you want to make an afghan in a particular pattern, then just start. You can always ask here for help.

Good luck.

I KNOW the feeling!!! When I wanted to learn something knew I tried a large granny square blanket... Its fun to NOT crochet row after row... Another technique I tired was crocheting in the round, to make hats and such... There is a great tutorial at www.crochetcababa.com with pics!!

Hats are fun, Dot Matthews has some easy ones. Try your local library especially if you can order from other branches within your library system/county. The crochet stitch bible is excellent for learning new stitch patterns. You can turn them into dish cloths if you wish.
