The beginning of my Afghan...thoughts? (I'm  a novice!)

Very pretty and colorful.

Tip: Be sure to leave the tails long enough, about 6" or more, where you add or cut yarn so that weaving in is easy.

Is it a good idea to switch to a bigger gauge or stick with the one you started with?

Gauge should be uniform through out the pattern. You can use different stitches anywhere you desire as long as the gauge measures the same. Otherwise, the sides of the afghan will be wavy instead of straight.
