(Made for & named after the surgeon who is fixing my cataract.)

FINISHED SIZE:

This hat is designed to fit an adult head.

 

MATERIALS:

5 oz. (141 g.) Red Heart Worsted Medium

(Note: Used in this photo: Red Heart Worsted Medium / Color 0303 – Painted Desert.)

Size I (9 / 5.5 mm) crochet hook

Darning yarn needle

 

GAUGE:

First 2 rnds = 3"

 

BASIC STITCHES:

ch (chain stitch)

dc (double crochet)

sc (single crochet)

yo (yarn over)

 

SPECIAL STITCHES:

 

inc dc cr st (increase double crochet cross stitch)

Directions: *In next stitch, work 1 double crochet in next stitch, work 1 double crochet in previous stitch, repeat as called for in pattern.*

 

dc cr st (double crochet cross stitch)

Directions: *Skip a stitch, work 1 double crochet in next stitch, work 1 double crochet in skipped stitch, repeat as called for in pattern.*

 

dc sh (double crochet shell)

Directions: *Slip 1 stitch, slip stitch in next stitch, skip 1 stitch, work 5 double crochet in next stitch, skip 1 stitch, slip stitch in next stitch., repeat as called for in pattern.*

 

 

HAT INSTRUCTIONS:

 

Ch 4, join with a sl st to first ch-1 to form a ring.

 

Rnd 1 (double crochet round): Ch 3 (counts as dc), 11 dc into ring. Join with sl st in top of ch 3. (12 dc)

 

Rnd 2 (increase double crochet cross stitch round): Ch 3, yo and make dc in last stitch of previous round, *in next stitch, work 1 double crochet in next stitch, work 1 double crochet in previous stitch, repeat from * around. Join with sl st in top of ch 3. (24 dc)

 

Rnd 3 (double crochet round): Ch 3, dc in same st as join, dc in next stitch, *2 dc in next stitch, 1 dc in next stitch; repeat from * around. Join with sl st in top of ch 3. (36 dc)

 

Rnd 4 (increase double crochet cross stitch round): Ch 3, yo and make dc in last stitch of previous round, *skip a stitch, work 1 double crochet in next stitch, work 1 double crochet in skipped stitch, repeat from * around. Join with sl st in top of ch 3. (36 dc)

 

Rnd 5 (double crochet round): Ch 3, dc in same st as join, dc in next stitch, *2 dc in next stitch, 1 dc in next stitch; repeat from * around. Join with sl st in top of ch 3. (54 dc)

 

Rnd 6 (double crochet cross stitch round): Ch 3, yo and make dc in last stitch of previous round, *skip a stitch, work 1 double crochet in next stitch, work 1 double crochet in skipped stitch, repeat from * around. Join with sl st in top of ch 3. (54 dc)

 

Rnd 7 (double crochet round): Ch 3, dc in same st as join, dc in next stitch, *2 dc in next stitch, 1 dc in next 2 stitches; repeat from * around. Join with sl st in top of ch 3. (72 dc)

 

Rnd 8 (double crochet cross stitch round): Ch 3, yo and make dc in last stitch of previous round, *skip a stitch, work 1 double crochet in next stitch, work 1 double crochet in skipped stitch, repeat from * around. Join with sl st in top of ch 3. (72 dc)

 

Rnd 9 (double crochet round): Ch 3, dc in same st as join, dc in next stitch, *2 dc in next stitch, 1 dc in next 2 stitches; repeat from * around. Join with sl st in top of ch 3. (72 dc)

 

Rnd 10 (double crochet cross stitch round): Ch 3, yo and make dc in last stitch of previous round, *skip a stitch, work 1 double crochet in next stitch, work 1 double crochet in skipped stitch, repeat from * around. Join with sl st in top of ch 3. (72 dc)

 

Rnd 11 (double crochet round): Ch 3, dc in same st as join, dc in next stitch, *2 dc in next stitch, 1 dc in next 2 stitches; repeat from * around. Join with sl st in top of ch 3. (72 dc)

 

Rnd 12 (double crochet cross stitch round): Ch 3, yo and make dc in last stitch of previous round, *skip a stitch, work 1 double crochet in next stitch, work 1 double crochet in skipped stitch, repeat from * around. Join with sl st in top of ch 3. (72 dc)

 

Rnd 13, 14, 15, 16, 17 (single crochet round): Ch 1, sc in same st as join (counts as first sc), sc in each st around. Join with sl st in first sc. (72 dc each round)

 

Rnd 18 (double crochet shell round): Ch 3 (counts as first dc), 2 more dc in same st as join, *skip next st, sl st in next st, skip next st, 5 dc in next st, repeat from * around; skip next st, sl st in next st, skip next 2 st, work 2 dc in base st of first 3 dc, sl st in top of chain 3 and finish off – leaving about a 12” tail. (17 shells)

 

Finishing: Using darning yarn needle, work at least 4” of the tail into the hat. Cut off excess tail yarn.

And silly me...when I saw 'cross-stitch' in the title I automatically pictured a crocheted hat with a bit of aida cloth tacked to it. :oops:2blush
