Blog Nettiquette?

I saw this posted somewhere & now I can't find it!

What is common blog nettiquette?

re; if I read certain craft/crochet blogs, is it appropriate to add a button link for their blog? Should you ask permission to add a link? Or is it considered a compliment rather than a privelege? How have most of you handled links? Several of your blogs are so nice & I would like to add a link to a few of the ones I visit often. Same thing with blogs that have some great patterns on them. I would like to share but what is the correct "nettiquette"?

I don't know what the "rules" are or whatever, but I add the buttons of blogs that I read to my blog. I haven't asked to link to them. I guess I assume that is what the button is for, you know? And I like to comment on the blogs when I can to let them know I read them. But you need to save the button to your own computer and then add it to your photobucket or whatever you use, because of bandwith. I think most people get happy when they see their button on your blog. I know I do. I have found out about a lot of good blogs by looking at buttons on other people's. As for the patterns, as long as you put a link on your blog and not the pattern itself, they will probably be happy that you did, it just generates more "traffic" to their blog/website. If you look on a lot of sites it will say to link back to them.Hope this helps a bit :)

Thank you. I feel the same way you do, that it generates visitors to their site & is a compliment to them but since I don't know crochetville bloggers yet I didn't want to have someone see their button on my blog & say "who is this fool using MY button without asking ?" :lol

well, I don't mind it. I also cinsider it a compliment:)

I just put their button up and link it to them, that way anyone can get to their blog from mine! I don't think anyone here will mind:)

I add links of any blog that I like well enough to read regularly. I've decided not to use buttons from individual blogs, though. Some people don't have buttons, so their link can get sort of lost between the buttons. I've also noticed that blogs with lots and lots of buttons load slower, and I want to keep my blog fast.

You have the right to link to any site you want to. Only a few tight-a--ed commercial sites have tried to make it a no-no. When someone lets me know that they've linked to my blog or subscribed to it, I thank them, and take a look at their blog in return. But I don't make any committments. If I like the look of their blog, I'll bookmark it and wait to see whether it's a keeper. If it is, I'll add it to my Bloglines subs, or to my permanent bookmarks if they don't have a feed.

because it's out there and anyone can find the blogs, it seems silly to ask for permission. if it were a password-protected site, it would be a completely different issue.

I have about 200 blogs that I read and I have been really negligent on putting up links, and I feel guilty about that! heh.

I do links for my parents company and do not request permission to add links, however I do notify the website and give them an option to opt-out (so to speak) if they don't want me to link to their site. I would like to know what sites are linking to mine and would not feel bad about asking that my link be removed from a site that I find objectionable, ie porn, adult entertainment, gambling, etc. I think it is a courtesy to let the other site know, but I don't think it is required if you don't feel that way.

I agree for things other than blogs. ;)

Thanks for all the opinions. I haven't added any yet :lol other than a Crochetville button link & a simple text link to a website with the sweater poncho pattern (the creator is here at Crochetville too) but I wanted to make sure it was ok with the majority to add buttons without notification since I'm new to Crochetville. Some of your blogs are so nice to read and many contain some wonderful patterns! I think I thought most of you know each other so you shared the buttons with each other. I didn't want to presume that it was ok to add them.
