My Market Bags

I needed some grocery bags so I could get away with not using plastic or paper any more. I could have bought a bunch of bags, but I had a lot of leftover spare yarn…sooo. Voila! The pattern is as follows:

Market Bag

This is worked in rounds.

In round 7 there is an additional st used. hdc3tog This is done by yo, draw up a loop, yo (in ch 2 sp) draw up a loop, yo draw up a loop, yo and draw through all loops on hook.

In handle, you do sc2tog. This is done by drawing up a loop in next 2 st, yo and draw through both loops on hook.

F Hook and worsted weight yarn. You can use cotton as well. Cotton may be stronger.

Ch 40

1st round) 2 sc in second ch from hook, sc in next 37 ch, 5 sc in last ch, sc in the opposite side of the next 37 ch, 3 sc in final sc, join with a sl st to 1st sc. 84 st

2) Ch 1, (sc, ch 2, sc) in same st as joining, sc in next 39 st, (sc, ch 2, sc) in next st, sc in next sc, (sc, ch 2, sc) in next st, sc in next 39, (sc, ch 2, sc) in next st, sc in next st, join with a sl st in beginning sc. 88 st

3) Ch 1, sc in same st as joining, (sc, ch 2, sc) in ch 2 sp, sc in next 41 st, (sc, ch 2, sc) in ch 2 sp, sc in next 3 st, (sc, ch 2, sc) in next ch 2 sp, sc in next 41 st, (sc, ch 2, sc) in next ch 2 sp, sc in next 2 st, join with a sl st in beginning sc. 96 st

4) Ch 1, sc in same st as joining, sc in next st, (sc, ch 2, sc) in ch 2 sp, sc in next 43 st, (sc, ch 2, sc) in ch 2 sp, sc in next 5 st, (sc, ch 2, sc) in next ch 2 sp, sc in next 43 st, (sc, ch 2, sc) in next ch 2 sp, sc in next 3 st, join with a sl st in beginning sc. 104 st

5) Ch 1, sc in same st as joining, sc in next 2 st, (sc, ch 2, sc) in ch 2 sp, sc in next 45 st, (sc, ch 2, sc) in ch 2 sp, sc in next 7 st, (sc, ch 2, sc) in next ch 2 sp, sc in next 45 st, (sc, ch 2, sc) in next ch 2 sp, sc in next 4 st, join with a sl st in beginning sc. 112 st

6) Ch 1, sc in same st as joining, sc in next 3 st, (sc, ch 2, sc) in ch 2 sp, sc in next 47 st, (sc, ch 2, sc) in ch 2 sp, sc in next 9 st, (sc, ch 2, sc) in next ch 2 sp, sc in next 47 st, (sc, ch 2, sc) in next ch 2 sp, sc in next 5 st, join with a sl st in beginning sc. 120 st

Next round is worked in back loops only.

7) Ch 2, hdc in 3 st, hdc3tog in (sc, ch 2, sc), hdc in next 47 st, hdc3tog, hdc in 9 st, hdc3tog, hdc in next 47 st, hdc3tog, hdc in 5 st, join with a sl st in top of beginning ch 2. 116 st

8) Ch 4, sk next st, dc in next st, ch 1, sk next st 57 times, join with a sl st in the 3rd ch of the beginning ch 4. 58 dc

9) Sl st into the ch 1 space BEHIND YOUR NEEDLE. DO NOT SL ST INTO THE CH 1 SP IN FRONT. Ch 4, sk next st, dc in ch 1 sp of prev rnd, ch 1, sk next st 57 times, join with a sl st in the 3rd ch of the beginning ch 4. 58 dc

Repeat round 9 for 31 rounds.

40) Ch 1, sc in same st as joining, sc in each dc and ch 1 sp around. Join with a sl st in beginning sc. Fasten off, weave in ends. 116 sc

Handle:

41) Join yarn above where one of the corners are. Sc in same st as joining, sc in next 12 st. Turn. 13 st

42 - 44) Ch 1, sc in same st as joining, sc in next 12 st. Turn. 13 st

45) Ch 1, sc in same st as joining, sc2tog in next 2 sc, sc in next 7 st, sc2tog in next 2 sc, sc in last sc. Turn. 11 st

46) Ch 1, sc in same st as joining, sc in each st across. Turn. 11 st

47) Ch 1, sc in same st as joining, sc2tog in next 2 sc, sc in next 5 st, sc2tog in next 2 sc, sc in last sc. Turn. 9 st

48) Ch 1, sc in same st as joining, sc in each st across. Turn. 9 st

Repeat row 48 for 38 rows.

86) Ch 1, sc in same st as joining, 2 sc in next st, sc in next 5 st, 2 sc in next st, sc in last st. Turn. 11 st

87) Ch 1, sc in same st as joining, sc in each st across. Turn. 11 st

88) Ch 1, sc in same st as joing, 2 sc in next st, sc in next 7 st, 2 sc in next st, sc in last st. Turn. 13 st

89 - 90) Ch 1, sc in same st as joining, sc in each st across. Turn. 13 st

Row 91 is crocheted WITH the top row of the bag and the handle.

91) Ch 1, sc in both the same st as joining and the sc above the opposite corner of the bag that you used earlier. Sc in in each st across. 13 st Fasten off, and weave in ends.

YAY! I was just thinking I needed some market bags too. I am trying to get away from paper or plastic and I have a stash of yarn (I went a little crazy at a sale) with no particular use at the moment. BUT it does now!!! Sounds great and I can't wait to get started! Thanks!
