Critter Knitters! *ahem*... Crocheters

Hi kids.

Don't know if you've heard of the Critter Knitters knit/crochet-a-thon already, but I'm going to whip up some blankets for shelter pets in NYC.

Why? First, because I'm a hard-core supporter of humane animal shelters (our dog is from the good 'ole BC SPCA). Second, because this is such an easy way of volunteering my time; the blankets are so small! Third, because I have some yarn I don't like very much, and wouldn't want to give to any human friend. Fourth, because there are some amazing prizes up for raffle. Oh, and fifth, because I was born and half-raised in NYC, and it's close to my heart even though I sleep well at night in the comfort of being as far away from there as I could get.

Wanna join me?

Kim

Hi Kim;

I'll join you. My two babies were found abandoned. The whole litter was found at the dog track.

I'm in, Kim! I am also a supporter of humane animal shelters (and humaneness to animals in general) and I, too, have some yarn unsuitable for human friends. But animal friends never complain, do they? :) My first pet was a stray cat we rescued. She died six years ago and I still get all teary thinking about her.

Here is my first critter blankie. I used all sc with a K hook and three strands of leftover yarn held together: two baby weight, pastel variegated and one sport weight, bright pastel green (I know, can something be bright and pastel at the same time?). It's the smallest size recommended, 18" x 18". Good thing, too, because I ran out of yarn so I put a border around with two strands held together: one white worsted and one pink worsted.

Kind of Eastery, but it's thick and well made and I worked the ends super duper securely (crocheted over half way then worked second half in with a yarn needle) so I think that makes up for the colors. :b

Thanks, Amber! They're all different yarns, but I don't know the brands because it's stuff I've had lying around the house for eons and I don't have the labels anymore. About the only other thing I can tell you about them is that the baby yarn I think is fingering weight. It's that stuff you see all the time that's blue/green/pink/white variegated with a shiny strand running through it. Oh, and the pale pink in the border is RH Super Saver Baby Pink.

The baby yarn with the shiny stuff is baby pompadour yarn, most likely sport weight unless its very thin. I agree your color combination looks great! I think it's a very appealing color when you look at it closely. Im sure some pet is going to love it :Y

Thanks, Chelle! And thanks for the yarn ID!

I've found that holding two or three different strands together can make even unappealing yarn (like that shocking green) look attractive. (The baby pompadour really tones down the green.) And it makes the blankies thick and cushy for the critters. :)

we also have rescue critters. 1 cat and 2 dogs - australian shepard and a harlequin great dane. i love the shelter. i called our local humane society and they don't take blankies for them. they use towels that a locoal laundry place brings in:( . i haven't called the spca yet, though - or the non-kill shelter downtown.... forgot about that one hmmmmmm

Rebecca, if anything, I'm sure one of us knows of a shelter you could donate too. I love that the Snuggles Project lists shelters all over the place, so if your town doesn't accept Snuggles, you can call somewhere else and mail them.

I've crocheted two, but I also have several sewn ones I'm donating. I'm giving mine to a local animal shelter, rather than mailing them all the way to New York.

We had two events for this charity in NYC. One in Manhattan in Central Park. One in Brooklyn in Prospect Park. I love it! It was fun going to the park knitting/crocheting together. You find that knitters/crocheters are the best in the world. We had a party. :cloud9

This appears to be an older topic, but I'm new and have to catch up. :lol I came across the Snuggles project information, and so I've made a blanket for a larger sized dog. I'm going to try to make some more things before I donate them, and I need to re-check the shelter list to see if the ones in my area accept them. I love that project!

Hi...I have excess yarn that I would love to donate for this cause. Can you use odds and ends of various yarns? Some full skeins and lots of partials skeins.

Hey all! I am new around here and I crochet/knit for animals as well. My "pet" project is crocheted cat balls. I foster kittens(bottle babies mostly from age 0-5 weeks) for two different rescue groups locally and all spring and summer, I crochet away and make these crochet balls and give them to the two groups. The kittens and cats at the shelters get to play with them and they give them out with adoptions as well. If anyone wants the pattern, please pm me and I will share. I would love to collect donations for my two groups as well, so if anyone wants to send me finished ones, let meknow or you can just take them to a local shelter or rescue group.

The blankies are a great idea as well. I would recommend the less snaggy yarn the better as the kittens will cling to the blankets all the time. I tend to use pieces of fleece material in their "nest" I keep them in as they are warm and they don't cling to them as much.

Anyway...glad to see there are some critter charity crocheters here as well..most seem to be for humans..I do that too..but I like the small projects

Aloha!

It's sooo awesome that I've found this thread. My 15 yo daughter and a group of her friends (8 so far)are doing this as a summer project. They are accepting donations for our local no kill shelter(where her "baby" came from) and the humane society (where our eldest cat came from) in Ontario, California:dog . I've been crochetting small blankets and they've been sewing, washing & sorting others. Gotta brag a little bit here...this was all her idea (I'm so proud of her). If anyone is still intrested in helping we'd appreciate all the help we could get. Her goal is 100 blankets by Labor Day! Mahalo!
