Anyone Else Have Problems W/ Doing Edgings?

I tried to do a shell stitch edging on a project recently and it did OK until I began putting in the shell stitches and then began to ruffle. Any ideas?

It's definitely a trial and error thing for me. I often have to adjust patterns for edgings because I crochet too tightly, so nothing ruffles when it's supposed to.

Try spacing the shells a little further apart. That should help.

Yes try playing with either a smaller OR larger hook - and use less stitches in the "shell" to see if it flattens out a bit - I have had to substitute "hdc" for some of the "dc" sometimes.

You could just go with a ruffled border. You could make it definite in the next row.

 

I realize it doesn't work for every afghan but I like a ruffled look on some of them.
