Bead Tapestry Crochet in Spring CrochetMe

I just looked at the illustrations and noticed that the directions called for "insert the hook, slide a bead down next to the crochet hook and project, then continue crocheting the stitch".

 

I was taught at a class to insert the hook, YO and pull up a loop, then slide down the bead and complete the stitch.

 

Was I taught wrong; are there 2 ways of doing this?

I've never crocheted with beads but I've been reading about it and have been thinking about trying it. There is a really cool site about snowflakes that explains all the places that you can add a bead in each kind of crochet stitch.
