Im doing double crochet caps which work up quicker (and are more giving as far as size imo) than sc caps. Here's my pattern:

1. Ch 4, make 11 dc in 4th ch from hook, join to 3rd ch of starting ch 4. (12 dc)

2. Ch 3 (counts as first dc now and throughout), dc in same stitch as joining, (2 dc in next stitch) around, join to 3rd ch of starting ch 3. (24 dc)

3. Ch 3, 2 dc in next stitch, (dc in next stitch, 2 dc in next stitch) around, join. (36 dc)

4. Ch 3, dc in next stitch, 2 dc in next stitch, (dc in each of the next 2 stitches, 2 dc in next stitch) around, join. (48 dc)

5. Ch 3, dc in next 2 stitches, 2 dc in next stitch, (dc in each of the next 3 stitches, 2 dc in next stitch) around, join. (60 dc)

For cap to fit smaller head sizes, skip to round 7, to make a larger cap, continue with round 6.

6. Ch 3, dc in next 3 stitches, 2 dc in next stitch, (dc in each of the next 4 stitches, 2 dc in next stitch) around, join. (72 dc)

7. Ch 3, dc in each stitch around. Join.

8-12. Repeat round 7.

13. Ch 1, sc in same stitch as joining, sc in next 5 stitches, sc decrease over next two stitches, (sc in next 6 stitches, sc decrease) around. Join. There may not be an even number so just sc in the last remaining stitches if it doesnt end at a decrease.

This last round helps keep a snug fit around the forehead so it's not so loose as to easily get knocked off or lost.

I used a J hook, where loose crocheters might use an I hook, with Red Heart Super Saver yarn. For a softer worsted weight yarn (i.e. caron simply soft) I would go up a hook size, and for wool-ease yarn I think I would go down a hook size.

I did not take a picture of the caps before I mailed them off today - but I've been trying to get my husband to take a picture of me in my cap that I finished crocheting today. I did it with red heart plush yarn, and I made my friend one which I just finished. It wouldnt show the stitches very well in a picture. I do have to crochet up another cap for my stepson, so when I finish it I will take a picture of it on him - probably tomorrow.
