My German co-workers reaction to my crocheting

Recommended Posts

I've been showing off my crochet at work - I crochet on the train - and it's been interesting to see the reactions.

One girl has done thread crochet but didn't realize that there were so many yarn options for crochet! It seems crocheting (häkeln in German) is mostly seen as a thread option. Magazines abound with table runners, doilies, curtains, etc. There are NO magazines for yarn crochet, just knitting (stricken in German). I've found one book - it's a beginners book that shows some dishclothes as examples. I've let her borrow on of my crochet magazines and she's amazed with the blankets and sweaters in there. :)

My two other female co-workers, who are not craft inclined at all, had the following reaction: "alles ist schoen richtig gleichmassig aus". In other words - wow, the stitches are all really even and the same size. Er? Why is this the first thing that comes to their minds? I find this very odd. To be fair, they also say that it looks good. So, I can't fault their taste. ;)

I just needed to share that.....

That is odd. Perhaps since thread is in abundance, without close inspection the stitches can look different sized and shaped? I'm only guessing, mind you, I don't know for sure. :thinking2

jingles96, I live in Germany as well, and I must say that the yarn crochet options are very limited, but there is a bi-monthly crochet magazine called die kleine Diana. There are other pattern books available, but you have to keep an eye out for them. Wolle Rödel sells crochet magazines every once in a while depending on the particular store, but your should check them out to see what is available in German.

Can your read German patterns? If so, could you help me? I've seen (and bought ) some patterns in German that I would like to make, but can't for the life of me figure out what I'm supposed to do.

Oh, and for the record, I agree that it was a typical German comment/compliment.

Hi pfirsch :wave

Sure, I'll help you! I bought a beginner's Crochet book in German at Wölle Rödel before Christmas just for that purpose (doing objects from German patterns). All the familiar stitches are there with names and wonderfull photos, so it should all be very easy to figure out. Plus - there is a wonderful section explaining the chart symbols - which is great since all German patterns seem to be done in symbol, not written out.

And anything I can't figure out from this book I can ask my co-worker who crochets.

So - ask away! Or email me at crochet [at] jinglelady.us.

psst - I posted a question about us "German" crocheters meeting up over in the "Seeking Local Crocheters". Check it out. :bad

It sounds like the reactions I had in Italy to my cross-stitch or crochet as well. Much attention to detail (including the back on the cross-stitch!) although with the crochet they would normally notice the design first. Not with the cross-stitch, though. :thinking2
