I hate ladder ribbon, too. I have 2 balls of bernat matrix, so looks like I would need to pick up 4 more balls to make this.

Sigh......why don't they make those yarns in decent amounts so we don't have to buy so darned many of them.

The original pattern calls for 12 skeins of 25 gm balls. However, you can find larger balls of the ladder ribbon. The bernat matrix and LB trellis are in 50 gm balls. So, you would only need 6 balls for those and I think that is about par for a shawl.

I was so excited when I saw this shawl. Then, I read it was ladder, ribbon yarn. I tried knitting a shawl with that stuff once, and I made quite a mess--an expensive mess. Not only do I not like working with ladder yarn, the cost of the materials here in Canada would be about $75--that is a lot to spend on something that I might mess up. Is plain ribbon yard easier to work with (without the ladders)? Do you think it could be substituted easily?

Don't know if it'll work the same but one of my Wal-Marts had the single thread ladder yarn on sale for .79 cents yesterday. Kind of like what Target had.

Just thought I'd mention it for anyone who wanted to try it.

Seventy-nine cents U.S. is certainly much cheaper than the $9.00 Canadian I would be paying for the yarn called for in the pattern. I am still afraid of ladder yarn, though.

Can you use caron's Simple soft in a soft blue instead of the ribbon yarn?
