Help understanding pattern. The number of stitched doesent add up

Mateo

Question

Hi, Im new here and I've been dealing with a pattern for a while trying to make a sweater for my soon to come baby girl in January.

The pictures looked great so I decided to try to make it.

This is the pattern link https://www.orchidloop.com/post/mila-sweater-free-pattern

It starts like this:

Setup Row

Ch 38 (44,48,54,60) dc in 3rd ch from hook and the following 6 (7,8,9,10) sts. Create a v-st in the next st, dc in 2 (3,3,4,5) sts. Create a v-st in the next st, dc in 14 (16,18,20,22) sts. Create a v-st in the next st, dc in 2 (3,3,4,5) sts. Create a v-st in the next st, dc in the remaining 7 (8,9,10,11) sts.

All good so far here, Im doing the newborn size and at the end of this first row after the chain I have 44 stitches, but then comes the trouble.

Rows 2-5: Ch 2, dc in each st across creating a v-st in each ch-sp. 72 (78, 82, 88, 94) sts

I've tried so many ways to get at the end 72 stitches..... It doesent make sense for me. There is somebody else with the same problem in the comments of the pattern.

My thought is that I need to increase from 44 stitches to 72 stitches in 4 rows so that makes it 28 stitches in total divided by the rows its 7 stitches increase per row. I dont know how to get the 7 because there are 4 ch-sp where I have to add a v-st. For me it would make more sense to have an increase of 8 on each row, but 7? I dont know how to make that work...

Is this something you can help me with? If so, I would really appretiate some guidance.

Thanks!

The construction is a topdown raglan.  Example of another one: Cute Crochet Baby Cardigan- Free Pattern – The Moule Hole

Set up row for 0-3 months (x= dc stitches)

ch 3(usually first stitch xxxxxxx (front of cardi); 1st corner of sleeve Vst(usually, dc chain dc); xx 2nd vst .  14 more x's(this is the back of cardigan).  (Second sleeve) Vst. DC in next 2 sts, Vst in next stitch..  DC remaining 7 sts(stitches). second front.

7sts; Vst, 2sts, Vst, 14sts, Vst, 2sts, Vst, 7sts [ 40 sts total] plus 4 chains. [44]  distracted by gs

place a marker in each v-stitch *chain*. 4 total

Row2: chain 2(counts as stitch) dc across till you get to your marker. Vstitch, dc across till you get to next marker...etc

r.2 8 Vst 4 Vst 16 Vst 4 Vst 8  (46 plus 4 chains)

r.3 9-6-18-6-9 (48 plus 4 chains)

r.4 10-8-20-8-10 (56 plus 4 chains)

r.5 11-10-20-10-11 (62 +4 chains)

Assuming I didn't goof.

r 6 12-12-22-12-12 [70+4]

Welcome to the 'ville, cute pattern!

I agree with your math, it has to be an increase of 8 per round following the instructions given, so the pattern's math (edit, re: total # of sts you end up with) is off.  I would just 'go with' it being a tad bigger, babies grow fast!  I'm not a mom but have read that newborn sizes are sometimes too small for actual newborns.

Ideally the setup row should have 40 so with the increases in the 4 rows would get you to 72 stitches.    I worked it as written and get 41 stitches.  At end I have 8 dc back to last ch sp.  The beginning has 9 to first ch sp.  I would start out ch 37, dc in 3rd ch from hook and in the following sts then make first v stitch

Ok I worked set up row and row 2.  The initial chain does not count. Chain2 isn’t a stitch.  Dc and 6 more as written (7).

7sts; Vst, 2sts, Vst, 14sts, Vst, 2sts, Vst, 7sts [ 40 sts total] plus 4 chains. [44]  distracted by gs

place a marker in each v-stitch *chain*. 4 total

Row2: chain 2(counts as stitch) dc across till you get to your marker. Vstitch, dc across till you get to next marker...etc

r.2 8 Vst 4 Vst 16 Vst 4 Vst 8  (46 plus 4 chains)

r.3 9-6-18-6-9 (48 plus 4 chains)

r.4 10-8-20-8-10 (56 plus 4 chains)

r.5 11-10-20-10-11 (62 +4 chains)

Assuming I didn't goof.

I glanced at next section *Band and I believe row 6 will follow the 12sc and sc in chain space skip 12   Forget the rest… for closing arm sleeve.  You may need to work one size larger or work row 6 before moving to band section.  Congratulations 🎉 on your soon to arrive baby.
