I would add some anti slip, too. 

When I crocheted slippers for my daughter, I had some anti slippery fluid to use like paint.

I think you’re correct he tends to run more than walk and here he’d slip in two rooms.  I have some shelf liner left from making jar grippers that I can sew or glue on.  Perfect fit.

It's so much fun to make things for grand kids, whether they're little or grown. Nice looking slippers!

I tried the fabric paint on slipper soles before and didn't care for it. Next time I think I'll try your idea with sewing on pieces of the shelf liner. I have a whole roll of the rubbery stuff somewhere.

Agree, fun to make for them.  Let’s me try some items on for fit and alter course to adjust. Gives me joy to see how much they love grannies stuff. 😀  positive feedback to make more
