Chain 3 substitute

I am working on a beginners round ripple.

The beginning of the rounds say to slip stitch in the next stitch then chain 3. Could I do a single crochet and chain 1 in place of the slip stitch chain 3?

I believe that is exactly what GrannySquare does. I think you will still want to join with a slip stitch, then do the sc.

The 'sc, ch-1' looks better than ch-3, but not quite as good as the chainless start.  Unlike a usual sc at the beginning of the round, I don't ch-1 first - it looks smoother without.  It is nice to have more than one trick in our crochet bag, though!
