Crocheted Mitered Squares

Out of curiosity, which way do you all prefer doing crocheted Mitered squares...from the inside out (increasing in the middle) or from the outside in (decreasing in the middle)?

I ask, because I'm trying both ways, and no matter what I do, they seem to be more diamond-shaped than square...I'm wondering if perhaps I should use a larger hook for the inside than the outer part...

Sounds to me like maybe it's your tension?  I've never had that problem before when making them.  What pattern are you using?
