The bag might be a bit big for a 4yo. You might want to use a smaller hook and thinner yarn to decrease the size. Also, see the background in the photo? That is the material that I used to line the inside of the Christmas Tote. I kept the Christmas ornament/ball theme going for the liner.

 

I would suggest using an 'F' hook and using only 1 strand of yarn instead of 2 as the pattern suggests.
