Can't remember where I saw it, but there was a very old pattern where you chained a multiple of five plus one. On the first row, it was (sc, ch5, sk 4) across. On the next row, it was (hdc in sc, a bunch of dc in the ch lap--I think 5) across. On the third, sc, ch 2, sc in center of the group, ch 2, sc) across, and rows 2 and 3 repeated. It's possiuble that Row 2 was actually (hdc, ch 5, sk 4) so if the scs don't work on a swatch, hdc might.

It is some kind of shell worked into ch st chains.  What appears to

be the bullion, I think, is the base of the stitches in the shell

as they wrap around the ch sts.it's very pretty.

I think RoseRed is right.

 I don't think it's bullion because bullion is done all on one string and

goes upwards next to each other, while the afghan looks to be done in a row

across with chains and sc between them. Then for the next row a certain number

of stitches look like they are done seperately in the ch loops.
