What yarn would be good.....

for a scarf for my niece? Her mother told me today that she would like one in University of Illinois colors for Christmas. So that's Orange and Navy.

 

She likes soft things. So any yarn suggestion would be appreciated.

There is Red Heart Soft. There is ILTY at Hobby Lobby. Then Both Mary Maxim and Herrschner's have soft yarns.

Any of them should make a nice soft scarf.

I know Bernat Satin has a very pretty navy. I don't know what a good orange would be.

Agreed. I love Caron simply soft as well. Its just so buttery soft. Bernat Satin is a close second to that for me.

My recommendations depend on your yarn budget. On the thrifty end of things, I like Lion Brand's Wool Ease (worsted weight, 80% acrylic, 20% wool), which is often on sale at Joann or you can use the coupons.

 

On the more indulgent end of things, sites like http://yarnmarket.com or http://bargainyarns.com have incredible discounts on high-quality (merino, merino/alpaca, wool/acrylic) yarns, and other sites are running sales right now. I ran into a "summer sale, 35% off on some yarns" just a few minutes ago at http://knitpicks.com . Knitpicks' sale ends June 30.

just had this problem myself... the best navy and orange I could find was ILTY at Hobby Lobby... no one else had a good bright orange color.

Caron Pounders aren't as soft as Simply Soft but they do have the bright orange.

The I LOVE THIS YARN from Hobby Lobby is absolutely the softest yarn. I was just there today and they did have an orange . . not a neon glowing type of orange, but a nice orange.
