Materials:

Worsted weight yarn (like redheart supersaver yarn) in 2 different colors.
(star color / background color)
Size H hook (5.00mm)
Yarn needle (to weave in ends)

Finish Size: 10”h x 10”w inches

Note: You may want to mark which ch2 space you join the sc to on Rnd 3, for later/future joining into an afghan. The star looks center/straightest when the ch2 space you join to is upwards.

Different Stitches:

Spike St: Insert hook in sc below next sc, yarn over and draw up a loop, yarn over and draw thru both loops on hook.
Note: On Rnd 3 the spike st is worked over the sc on Rnd2 and into sc on Rnd 1.

Extended Double Crochet (EDC): Yarn over, insert hook in next st, yarn over, pull up a loop, yarn over, draw thru 1 loop, yarn over, draw thru 2 loops, yarn over, draw thru last 2 loops.

Treble Crochet (TC): Yarn over twice, insert hook in next st, yarn over, pull up a loop, yarn over, pull through 2 loops, yarn over, pull through 2 more loops, yarn over, and pull through last 2 loops.

V-Stitch (V-st): dc, ch2, dc

Double Crochet Decrease (Dc Dec next 2 sts together) or (DC Dec): Yarn over, insert hook in next st, yarn over, pull a loop. Yarn over, draw thru 2 loops, yarn over, insert hook in next st, yarn over, pull up a loop, yarn over draw thru 2 loops, yarn over and draw thru last 3 loops on hook.

Directions:

Rnd 1: With star color ch2, 1 sc in 2nd chain from hook, [ch2, 1 sc in same chain] Do this 4 times, ch2, join with sl st to first sc.
(5sc, 5-ch2 spaces)

Rnd 2: Ch1, 1 sc in same st as joining, (1 hdc, 1 dc, ch2, 1 dc, 1 hdc) all in next ch2 space, [1 sc in next st, (1 hdc, 1 dc, ch2, 1 dc, 1hdc) all in next ch2 space] Do this 4 times, join with sl st to first sc.
(5sc, 10hdc, 10dc, 5-ch2 spaces)

Finish off.

Rnd 3: Join background color with a sc to any ch2 space, ch2, 1 sc in same ch2 space, 1 sc in each of the next 2 sts, work Spike st over next st and into sc on Rnd 1, 1 sc in each of the next 2 sts, [(1 sc, ch2, 1 sc) all in next ch2 space, 1 sc in each of the next 2 sts, work Spike st over next st and into sc on Rnd 1, 1 sc in each of the next 2 sts] Do this 4 times, join with sl st to first.
(30sc, 5 Spike sts, 5-ch2 spaces)

Rnd 4: Ch2, 1 dc in same st as joining, (2 dc, ch2, 2 dc) all in next ch2 space, [1 dc in each of the next 2 sts, skip next 3 sts, 1 dc in each of the next 2 sts, (2 dc, ch2, 2 dc) all in next ch2 space] Do this 4 times, 1 dc in each of the next 2 sts, skip next 3 sts, 1 dc in next st, join with sl st to first dc.
(40dc, 5-ch2 spaces)

Rnd 5: Ch2, 1 dc in same st as joining, 1 hdc in next st, 3 sc in next ch2 space, [1 hdc in next st, 1 dc in next st, 1 EDC in each of the next 4 sts, 1 dc in next st, 1 hdc in next st, 3 sc in next ch2 space] Do this 4 times, 1 hdc in next st, 1 dc in next st, 1 EDC in each of the next 4 sts, 1 dc in same st as first dc is worked into, join with sl st to first dc.
(15sc, 10hdc, 10dc, 20 EDC) (56sts total)

Rnd 6: Ch2, 1 dc in same st as joining, 1 hdc in each of the next 2 sts, 1 sc in each of the next 3 sts, 1 hdc in each of the next 2 sts, 1 dc in each of the next 2 sts, 1 EDC in next st, (1 TC, ch3, 1 TC) all in next st, [1 EDC in next st, 1 dc in each of the next 2 sts, 1 hdc in each of the next 2 sts, 1 sc in each of the next 3 sts, 1 hdc in each of the next 2 sts, 1 dc in each of the next 2 sts, 1 EDC in next st, (1 TC, ch3, 1 TC) all in next st] Do this 3 times, 1 EDC in next st, 1dc in next st, join with sl st to first dc.
(12sc, 16hdc, 16dc, 8 EDC, 8 TC, 4-ch3 spaces) (60sts total)

Finish off.

Rnd 7: Join star color with a sl st to any ch3 space, ch3, (2dc, ch2, 3dc) in same ch3 space, [*ch2, skip next 2 sts, 1 dc in next st, skip next st, V-st in next st, skip next st, 1 dc in next st, ch2, skip next st, 1 dc in next st, skip next st, V-st in next st, skip next st, 1 dc in next st, ch2, skip next 2 sts*, (3 dc, ch2, 3 dc) all in next ch3 space] Do this 3 times, Repeat from * to * once, join with sl st to top of ch3.
(40dc, 8 V-sts, 12-ch2 spaces, 4-corner ch2 spaces) or (56dc, 20-ch2 spaces, 4-corner ch2 spaces) (beginning ch3 counts as dc)

Rnd 8: Ch3, 1 dc in each of the next 2 sts, (3 dc, ch2, 3 dc) all in next ch2 space, [*1 dc in each of the next 3 sts, ch2, skip next ch2 space, DC Dec next 2 sts together, ch2, skip next ch2 space, DC Dec next 2 sts together, ch3, skip next ch2 space, DC Dec next 2 sts together, ch2, skip next ch2 space, DC Dec next 2 sts together, ch2, skip next ch2 space*, 1 dc in each of the next 3 sts, (3 dc, ch2, 3 dc) all in next ch2 space] Do this 3 times, repeat from * to * once, join with sl st to top of ch3.
(48dc, 16 DC Dec, 16-ch2 spaces, 4-ch3 spaces, 4-corner ch2 spaces) (beginning ch3 counts as dc)

Finish off.

Rnd 9: Join background color with a sc to any corner ch2 space, (1 sc, ch2, 2 sc) all in same ch2 space, [*1 sc in each of the next 6 sts, 3 sc in next ch2 space, skip next DC Dec, 3 sc in next ch2 space, skip next DC Dec, 4 sc in next ch3 space, skip next DC Dec, 3 sc in next ch2 space, skip next DC Dec, 3 sc in next ch2 space, 1 sc in each of the next 6 sts*, (2 sc, ch2, 2 sc) all in next ch2 space] Do this 3 times, Repeat from * to * once, join with sl st to first sc.
(128sc, 4-ch2 spaces)

Rnd 10: Ch1, 1hdc in same st as joining, 1 hdc in next st, (2 hdc, ch2, 2 hdc) all in next ch2 space, [1 hdc in each of the next 32 sts, (2hdc, ch2, 2 hdc) all in next ch2 space] Do this 3 times, 1 hdc in each of the next 30 sts, join with sl st to first hdc.
(144hdc, 4-ch2 spaces)

Finish off and weave in ends.

I think the scans turn out good- is clear and has a nice dark background!

 

The square is truly lovely. I love the star and I love the colors you chose, too! This one goes on my to-do list!

I am just about to finish this square, I'm on the 2nd to last row (though, probably going to do 2-3 rows, of the last row, as I need my square to be 12 inches, instead of 10)...and I'm almost surprised at how easy it was, for all the special stitches and all. This was probably the hardest pattern I've followed yet (but, it was still not real hard for me)! But it was a lot of fun. Thanks so much!! :):clap
