flag afghan

Question

Guest chillykat

Hi everyone, I'm Kat and just found this site today :cheer2 , I'm so glad cause I need hellllllpppp!!!!!! I'm making a flag afghan and am having trouble in the blue section with making the stars. I'm having to change from blue to white quite frequently and wondering am I suppose to be cutting the yarn after I change colors and if so what do I do with all the loose strands of yarn that are on both side because afghan is worked top to bottom. On the pattern all it says is "when working star section, work over strand not in use." How do you do that? I'm still a novice and perhaps this isn't a project I should be tackling yet, but I promised it to someone and now I'm stuck. I'd appreciate any help I could get

Thanks

Kat :th

whew, girl! you really bit one off!:faint

that's a whole lotta work for a newbie!

i've never stitched over the yarns when patterns call for it... i'm a glutten that way, i'd rather deal with the loose ends and weaving than be able to see the 'stitched over' yarn through my work....

so, i can't give you advice on that, but... do you know how to change colors in mid-stitch (finishing off with the new color then next sc) is that making sense....

also, making small skeins of the white and let them hang in the back until the next row for each star will help you out a lot as well.

was that clear as mud, or what :ohdear :o ops:huh

hi first i want to welcome you to the forum, we hope to hear from you often. i have made several of these type afghans and all you have to do is when you are changing from the white to blue,or vise-a versa just make sure that the color that you are changing from is behind the new stitch, then you just crochet right over the yarn and then pick it back up when it is time to change back. if it is a long ways in the changing of the colors, it is better to just cut and tie and then weave the ends in. another thing you could do is just make the blue part solid, and then crochet the stars and then sew them on. good luck and if i can help let me know. vicki:bounce

hahahahahahahah, you ladies are too funny I think I might try Vicki's suggestion (no offense Rebecca) and hunker down for the long task ahead. Thankfully the person I promised it to doesn't expect it anytime soon "Whew". I'll let you all know how the progess is going. Actually my husband has already made one of the flag's but he just crochet the blue a solid color and now he wants to rip it apart because he thinks the stars will be too hard to make that way.....I told him not too but he can be a bit hard-headed teehee teehee....

Anyhow, thanks everyone for your input...I'll be back asking about weaving in the ends next!!!!

Later everyone

Kat

Glad you've had some experience with this technique. :cheer My question is, when I do that going one direction, on the return trip the thread I worked over (in another color) shows. When working in rows, the piece is reversible so there is no "front" or "back" (generally). I crochet over ends when working in the round because there is a "front and back".

So, how does one keep that alternatively colored yarn being carried along show:? :? :? :? :? :? :? :? :? :D

Hi Amber,

I checked out your flag afghan....very nice job. So, you made the stars separate and sew them on? How do you make the stars. I found a couple of patterns with separate stars that you add to the flag, but I had a hard time making the star. Thanks for your help!!!!!
