I always seem to have a tight beginning chain

Good Morning:

My problem is that when I start any project, my initial chain is always too tight. As I progress to the first couple of rows, my work starts to curve in. Any suggestions please?

Use a bigger hook for the chain then go to the size the pattern calls for.

I will try using a bigger hook on my next project. I crochet for fun and my projects are simple, dishcloths, dishtowels, afghans.

I like that suggestion to use a bigger hook. I have the opposite problem, I chain too loose and it looks all big and loopy, maybe I should use a smaller hook....hummmmmmm. great idea!!!

Yes, a size or two larger hook should help with a tight beginning chain. Some patterns even call for it, which is a good idea, especially if you have to work in both sides of the chain.

I have the same problem and I agree, I use a hook 2 sizes bigger for the chain then what I crochet the rest with.

This works. Even if the chain is too loose, the stitches in the first couple of rows pulls it into size which is waaay better than the other way around. Just my take, but I'm using bigger hooks for chains.

 

However you hold your hook & yarn, it's harder to hold consistent tension while chaining than doing other stitches.

If your starting row is a basic stitch you could also try a chainless foundation. You can find videos for it on YouTube. I did this when working with a sport weight yarn that was really stretchy. When I chained it the chain was way too loose.
