Impossible ear warmer!

Recommended Posts

My daughter sent me a picture of an ear warmer she wants me to crochet for her. I'm a beginner, and I don't really know how to figure this out myself. I can't post the picture because of forum rules, so I will try to describe it. The top of the head part is about 3 inches wide and each side, over the ear, expands out to about 4 inches. It ties under the chin. The unique thing about it is that instead of being worked in a lot of rows across (like parallel with the ground when it's being worn), it's worked back and forth from tie to tie in a very elongated elipse. It also alternates colors, so it looks like it is striped, with one color in the center, then another color, then the first color again around the whole outside. The ties are the same as the beginning and ending color. Whew! Does that make any sense to anybody? My girl wants this as an Xmas present, and I don't even know where to begin. Thanks for your help.

That's cute. It's worked in rounds. What makes it wider over the ear is the ends of the first rounds are 'bumped out', and the rest of the rows follow. The 'bump out' is made by simply making a whole bunch of extra stitches into each end stitch (more than you usually would when making a plain oval).

Edit: here's how to make a 'basic oval'

The length of the chain would be from ear to ear. Where the basic oval has 3 chains in each end stitch instead of one, you will need to put a lot more, and maybe use a taller stitch (like hdc) in the end circles.

Well just wanted to show my favorite head warmer pattern:

I've made a couple of them. Love it!!!

You could also check www.crochetpatterncentral.com ...i am sure they would have lots of patterns.

good Luck.

I'm biased to that one too! ;) Thanks for the kudos!

If you take a look at my pattern for the Hat pattern in this set

http://www.crochetville.org/forum/showthread.php?t=85509

scroll down to see the hat part. It may show you a way to get what you want. just skip the part with the holes for her pony tops and work along a chain stitch

As to making a wider bit for the ear parts, use dc or Tr in the ends and only hdc for the rest and likely only in the beginning round
