"Hanging Around" Drawstring Bag or Pillow

almoreland and I made this pattern for a CAL in another group. We hope you enjoy! :hook

"Hanging Around" Drawstring Bag or Pillow

 

Finished size: 8 x 6 inches

 

Materials:

F hook

G hook

2 oz of blue worsted weight yarn (could substitute with another color of choice, not brown or green)

small amount brown worsted weight yarn

small amount green worsted weight yarn

scrap of white worsted weight yarn

scrap of pink worsted weight yarn (could substitute with white if needed)

scrap of black yarn or embroidery floss/thread

tapestry needle

ribbon or cord for a drawstring OR polyfil for a small pillow

 

 

Face:

ch 2 with F hook and brown

rnd 1: 6 sc in 2nd ch from hook.

rnd 2: 2 sc around x 6.

rnd 3: (sc in next st, 2 sc in next st) x 6. join with sl st in next st. End off, weave in ends.

 

Face Detail:

ch 3 with F hook and white

Row 1: sc in 2nd ch from hook, 3 sc in next ch. Working on opposite side of beg ch, 2sc in next ch. join with sl st in next st. ch 2, do not turn.

Row 2: dc, sc in each of the next 2 sts. Join with sl st in next st. End off, leaving sufficient yarn for sewing.

 

Ears:

ch 2 with F hook and brown.

Row 1: 3 sc in 2nd ch from hook. Ch 1, turn.

Row 2: 2 sc in each of the next 3 sc. End off, leaving sufficient yarn for sewing.

 

Inner Ear:

Ch 2 with F hook and pink. 3 sc in 2nd ch from hook. End off, leaving sufficient yarn for sewing.

 

Body (limbs worked in):

ch 8 with F hook and brown

Row 1: sc in next 6 sts, 3 sc in next st. Working on opposite side of beg ch, sc in next 5 sts. 2 sc in next st. Do not join, do not turn.

Row 2: 2 sc in next st. sc in next 5 sts. 2 sc in each of the next 3 sts. sc in next 5 sts, 2 sc in each of next 2 sts.

Row 3: ch 10. sl st in 2nd ch from hook and back down ch. sl st into next st of row 2. sl st in next st. **ch 7, 2 sc in 2nd ch from hook, sc in next 4 sts. Sl st in next st of row 2 and next 5 sts.***Repeat from ** to *** twice, ch 7, 2 sc in 2nd ch from hook, sc in next 4 sts, sl st in next st in next 2 sts. End off, weave in ends.

 

Assemble Monkey: Sew on face detail to face as shown in picture. Sew inner ears to each ear. Sew ears on with 6 sp between them at the top, evenly center on either side of face. Sew face to body slightly off center for a little bit of whimsy if desired, as shown in picture.

 

 

Tree:

ch 4 with F hook and green

Rnd 1: 11 dc in 4th ch from hook, join with sl st in top of beg ch 3, ch 3, do not turn.

Rnd 2: dc in same st, 2 dc in each st around, join with sl st in top of beg ch 3, do not turn.

Rnd 3: (skip next st, 5 dc in next st, skip next st, sl st in next st) x5, skip next st, 5 dc in next st, skip next 2 sts, join with sl st in first dc, end off.

 

Tree Trunk:

In 2nd from last st made in Rnd 3 of tree join with F hook and brown, ch 1

Row 1: sc in same st and in next 3 sts, ch 1, turn.

Rows 2-9: sc across, ch 1, turn.

Row 10: 2 sc in 1st st, sc in next 2 sts, 2 sc in next st. End off, weave in ends.

 

 

Bag:

ch 36 with G hook and blue

Rnd 1: sc in 2nd ch from hook, sc in each of next 33 ch, 2 sc in last ch, do not turn, working along the opposite side of starting ch, sc in each of next 34 ch, join with sl st in top of first sc, ch 1, do not turn.

Rnd 2-25: sc in same st and in each st around, join with sl st in top of beg sc, do not turn.

Rnd 26: ch 3 (counts as beg ch 2 plus ch 1), skip next st, *hdc in next st, ch 1, skip next st, rep from * 33 times more, join with sl st in top of beg ch 2, do not turn.

 

NOTE: If you wish to do the pillow option, finish off here, assemble as instructed below, stuff, and sew pillow closed.

Rnd 27: sl st into next ch 1 space, 2 sc in same ch 1 space, 2 sc in each remaining ch 1 sp, join with sl st in top of beg sc, ch 1, do not turn.

Rnd 28: sc in same st, reverse sc in each remaining st around, join with sl st in top of beg sc. End off, weave in ends.

 

 

Assembly: Lay bag flat and place monkey and tree appliques on front of bag as desired (or as pictured). Sew appliques in place by weaving sewing yarn in and out of edge, secure with a knot and weave in ends. Weave drawstring in and out through ch 1 sps on row 26 and secure with knot when each end meets.
