suggestions for shawl pattern (petite)

I want to make my mom a shawl b/c she's always getting cold at meetings, the movies, etc. I'd like a pattern that's a little lacy but still solid enough to provide warmth. oh yeah....and i'd really really like it if the pattern was free. my mom is petite so i want something that won't overwhelm her. are there any shawl patterns out there that are a bit smaller or better for petite women?

How about a cape or caplet? There are a lot of free patterns. Lion has some very nice patterns like the Half Moon Shawl. It is very nice for petite women.

If the pattern you choose starts from the top and works downward you might be able to just stop when it is big enough. Of course, this depends on the size of the repeats and if a border depends on a certain number of stitches being completed. I've made several Seraphina Shawls and when they get close to my size I begin to try them on and stop when I am satisfied. I'm 5' tall.

I'm hesitant to try one where I'd just stop when it gets large enough since I don't have my mom nearby to measure and I want this to be a surprise.
