Silk crochet thread?

Recommended Posts

I've been Googling and also searching Crochetville for a discussion of this, but can't find one, so I'm hoping you threadie experts can answer this for me: I'd like to crochet a scarf or shawl in thread, but I'd like to use silk or at least a silkier thread than regular crochet cotton. But I can't find silk crochet thread.

Can you recommend a silk crochet thread? Where do I buy it? Or can you recommend another thread with exceptional drape?

Thank you!

I've been trying to use the wrap-per-inch method (info here http://www.woolfestival.com/articles/WPI.htm ) for comparing sizes of yarn; by my count size 10 thread is about 38 wpi. Here is a company that gives the wpi of their yarns http://woolworks.com/Knitting/Yarn/Lace/Lace.html and another http://www.halcyonyarn.com/yarn_weight.html I haven't ordered from either of those places, yet....just look and wish, so far:lol

I bought a cone of silk thread with linen from this person, but it was so long ago, I don't remember the name or type. It was so thin, I had to crochet with two strands together. I made this:

Where I bought it:

You can try something like this. It is the same size as size 10 thread, but very, very slippery to work with.:hook

The color choices are absolutely lovely! Thank you, Mary Jo, for the link. I'm going to file this away with my other thread sources. :)

I have had wonderful experiences with both Halcyon and Webs on line ordering--in addition to the regular yarn section of the site, check the "weaving" yarns section of Webs, because the thinner yarns are mostly there. And the lovely people who own Webs are always glad to help you decide what you might like to try.

I know this is a old thread but I want to share my silk thread secret.

Silk thread heaven! Granted they're ~really~ fine threads but you can ask them to ply them for you for free! They're also over-seas (if you're from the US anyway) so you might have to wait for customs and such but I never had any problems.

I bought some a year back and the thread is just beautiful. You have to keep checking back often cause they get different colors/weights in all the time. If you see a color you like, you better act fast! I was lucky enough to get some pastel blue and purples.

$20 for over 5000 yards of silk? I'll take it!!
